The Big Backup
Totally separate from my new build, I have at the last count after finding my lost Windows 10 key, nine mechanical drives to back up ranging from two old EIDEs and the rest are SATA, the larger of the ancient drives is 200Gigs though so I kept it around for backup purposes (in the era before USB fla...

Re: New PC Upgrade 2020 into 2021
Actually Neth, I do have a GTX 980 Ti (6 GB VRAM if that matters) sitting around that I just replaced with an RTX 3070. Fancy it? Dunno how much you were willing to pay for a graphics card, but you can have it for £120. Graphics card market is awful at the moment because of all the shortages, these...

Re: New PC Upgrade 2020 into 2021
Software success (I hope)! Decided to trust the MS store and found the free app that lets you see your actual Win10 Key without any faff. One reinstall and it'll all be activated properly and I can basically not worry about the replacement date for my stolen USB key if I have the code. That's a good...

Re: New PC Upgrade 2020 into 2021
https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/xYdCK3 - pretty much only changing the CPU and mobo backbone. The great thing is that there's loads of case choice out there and I can slam the parts into the old one as a testbed, make sure they work, and then budget for a better case later if any rellies come calli...

Re: New PC Upgrade 2020 into 2021
It's the Jeantech Phong from my God, 16.5 years ago  but thankfully I bought the two of them and it saves me having to take everything out of the Cooler Master Elite which had the power switch that snapped and fell off. It'll more than do for now and then I can think about an upside down case...

Re: New PC Upgrade 2020 into 2021
https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/PyZmRT and yes I did go all round the houses before realising DJ's motherboard pick was the best in my price range plus I have a Gigabyte right now so why change if it's been great for 8 years? Same for Corsair RAM that also served me well in the DDR2 days so happy t...

Re: New PC Upgrade 2020 into 2021
Thanks HH I will get more into PartPicker as time goes on but I've kickstarted the build with the HSF; https://www.arctic.de/en/Freezer-7-X-CO/ACFRE00085A Had I known you'd get a 6yr warranty getting it direct from them I might have gone through the German webshop but they wanted Paypal only and bei...

Re: New PC Upgrade 2020 into 2021
Excellent vid thanks Pew, maybe if I took the plunge with SSDs I would go with the transitional version that still connects with a SATA cable even if it wasn't the fastest. Anyone order components from Amazon, any size? I know they were pretty competitive price-wise during the AM3 CPU era but what a...

Re: New PC Upgrade 2020 into 2021
Thanks Rusty, I checked and that GeForce generation's now down to a much more reasonable £125-175 depending on whether it's GDDR5 or 6 but Nvidia's trying to drive people to 8Gb on a single GPU which I just don't need even if I want a dual screen setup. Hopefully they will keep a decent spread of 4G...

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7859845 Even though this headset's not USB they function so well I made a Xmas gift out of them for a relative, good to sort out something I'd needed to replace for ages. Next stop, 2nd monitor to kick off a new build. [EDIT] and I knew I couldn't make it third time l...

Re: I Just Watched (Films)
The Irishman aka I Heard You Paint Houses Glad it was on Netflix and I could stop and pause anywhere to get more snacks and a drink, trademark Scorsese with the steadicam and other signature camera movement, but it's understated and more low-key than Goodfellas or Casino and you definitely get the ...

Re: Christmas 2020!
Merry Christmas everybody, nearly didn't get to login but thankfully the problems seem to have been solved, cheers Mantis :) Present swappage will be tomorrow with the rellies driving around but Xmas has been as low key as Tier 4 suggests. However I'm not begrudging a Greggs sausage roll and BK frie...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54818644 Nooooo not Argos! I had three in one area and they closed the oldest one but I knew at least a second would go because of the concession inside a large Sainsbury's. I don't know how many branches there are in total but they are blinking before counting Ch...

Re: New PC Upgrade 2020 into 2021
I always used to build my own but my last 2 computers were pre built. I couldn't get the prices for the indiviual bits at a lower cost than they could build it and deliver it to me... I'll probably get a pre built for my next Pc too. I'm just waiting for the next influx of 3080s Actually Rusty or a...
