Re: The Elephant in the Room - Brexit

To be honest, if Brexit destroys the Conservatives then that would be some small mercy.

Re: The F1 thread

Yes, but the purpose of the rule is to prevent intentional dangerous rejoining of the track. Imagine, for example, that Vettel had been sent across that corner as a result of someone else driving into him - should he still be penalised then? By your logic it was a dangerous re-joining of the track s...

Re: The F1 thread

A penalty was applied which over -corrected something which Vettel did not have full control over. I maintain the rule, if applied by the spirit rather than the letter, does not apply here. But perhaps the bigger problem is that the minimum penalty the stewards could have applied was the 5 seconds h...

Re: Currently Playing

Morrowind's magic system is amazing, in that it lets you create your own spells with no consideration for how game-breaking or ridiculously OP they might be. Oblivion dialled that down a lot, but it was still generous in what it let you do. One of the many reasons that, as much as I love Skyrim, it ...

Re: The return of the D&D campaign: This time it's potatoes

At work we've been given a free seminar on better sleep, and part of it includes a guided meditation mp3. I've never listened to guided meditation before, but what struck me after a few minutes was how similar the narrator's description of a tropical island was to D&D. She's telling me how I'm stood...

Re: I Just Watched (Films)

I dislike the MCUs general lack of consequence to global devistation but this takes the piss! X-mans <> MCU ;) Also to be fair, the MCU used Civil War to address the consequences of global devastation (and then went on to destroy an international airport because of a pissing contest). I've no real ...

This gives me some reassurance that they are self-aware about sensitive issues and are (at least in this case) using them in service of world-building.

“Necessary” in this context depends entirely on what story they’re trying to tell. We don’t know what that story is yet.

Re: Cyberpunk 2077 [PC, PS4, XBone] - out April 16 2020

How is a story meant to address difficult ideas without portraying them? I'm struggling to see how it would be necessary to use a stereotype in order to make a point. There are plenty of ways to tackle difficult ideas/issues without resorting to stereotypes. For instance, if you’re highlighting tha...

Re: Cyberpunk 2077 [PC, PS4, XBone] - out April 16 2020

If the dev team are in fact culturally/racially insensitive by our standards, is it not better that they’re attempting to have a diverse cast of characters and making mistakes rather than just having a generic bunch of white NPCs? I think a heavy-handed journalistic approach here is misguided and mo...

Re: Cyberpunk 2077 [PC, PS4, XBone] - out April 16 2020

I'm not sure there is any legitimate reason to use racial stereotypes Of course there is. How is a story meant to address difficult ideas without portraying them? Inclusion of stereotyping and any other problematic content is not automatically the same as endorsing it, nor is it necessarily an indi...

Re: Cyberpunk 2077 [PC, PS4, XBone] - out April 16 2020

It's not a huge surprise that the demo focused more on action than on the cerebral parts of the game - I mean, this is E3 where marketing assumes guns and boobs are the reason everyone is there. The stuff about cultural insensitivity strikes me as looking for things to be offended by. I'm aware that...
