Now to see if the difference between 60Hz and 144Hz is as noticeable as I've been told.

It is, I'd say it's a better move than going for a 4K screen.

Yep, agreed. Trying to get a decent FPS at 4K is hard work, and Windows can get confused about display scaling when you switch in and out of games. I don't think it's ready yet.

I love my high-FPS monitor. It's nothing deal-breaking if I couldn't have it, but I find it really nice. G-Sync / FreeSync are great too, I fucking hate screen tearing.

Ive upgraded my desk.

This setup has served me well for many a year...
Image
Its manky. A shelf with a mousemat glued onto it and a K580. Ive flirted with other keyboards but I keep coming back to this old manky worn out lump of greeatness. Times change though so the postie brought me one of these beasties...
Image
A Corsair K63 and the whateverthe name lapboard. Its ok but I'm kind of feeling like I made the wrong choice. 70hour battery life (with the backlight off) vs a year+, it takes ages to wake up from standby (well, 5 seconds but the Logitech never missed a stroke), the shift and ctrl feel a bit more awkward to pinkie, it being clamped into the board means its harder to get a slight angle for wasd confort and CLACKCLACKCLAKCLAKCLAKCLAK. I think its yet another PC gamer epeen thing because mecahical switches are just annoying! "Eew I could never touch a membrane keyboard again" - fuck off, membrane is awesome! ยฌ_ยฌ

I flirted with this for a while...
Image
Cut a shelf in half for a small lap board...but its yet another Razer thing Ive owned that sucks. 100% hit rate Razer! They keys, especially the left collumn are kind of unresponsive without a full press and it could be that I have weird hands but nothing in the thumb area feels like it was designed ergonomically. Its nowhere near as good as the G13 or even the old Nostromo! I might actually pick up a G13 again and go with this setup but I'll give the Corair a few weeks to try and train my hands because to be fair on it I have had 10 years to know the K580.

I really wish Logi would do a lightspeed verson of the G13 ;_;

Itโ€™s hard to mount one to feasibility use from the couch. Gaming relaxing so couch beats chair!

I decided I fancied playing some new games this year after all, after my main GPU died 6 months ago, so I ordered an Asus AMD RX 580. It was by far the best GPU on my ยฃ150(ish) budget and should keep me going for a few years. Nvidia are poor in this price category, and I just can't afford anything expensive right now.

I think I'll be getting Borderlands 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2!

Thanks! I also picked up a CoolerMaster TX3 Evo cooler on sale for 15quid to replace my stock Intel cooler.

The stock cooler was okay for the majority of stuff, but I noticed with GTAV it was really shagging the CPU temps more than I would want.

I took a notion and bought an old MacBook Air 11. Been looking for a small ultrabook with an ok keyboard that would go in my work bag and for form factor I kept coming back to the Air 11 and it does fir the bill nicely. I love the build of it, the thinness, they touchpad is really nice and the keyboards fairly ok. Unlocking and authorising things via the Apple Watch is great..... when it works, its quite finicky.

The screens properly bad though, even for 6 years ago. MacOS is also a proper mindfuck as is the keyboards bottom left section. It does fill what I wanted it for quite nicely though I am teetering on just installing windows on it. Itโ€™s like trying to play XBox after playing Switch.

I really really like the size and build a whole lot! It seems like it could take a beating and looks like it already has but I got it cheap so can't complain!

I much prefer macOS for getting work done, but I've been using them for somewhere around 18 years, so had plenty of time to get used to its idiosyncrasies and customise my setup. If you're going to try to stick with it for a bit, I'd recommend getting a launcher like LaunchBar, Alfred, or QuickSilver. You can absolutely get shit done without one, but my god they make some tasks super convenient.

As an aside, does anyone know of something similar for Windows? I really miss being able to select some text and manipulate it right then and there, perform quick calculations, all that jazz.
