So, after having it sat at the foot of my desk for two weeks, I finally got around to installing the new PSU. I went for a Corsair RM850i, which is probably overkill, but at the time of buying it was actually cheaper than the 750w version. I've played Control for about an hour since, and it didn't shut down (and this was the latest game that had caused the issue). Anyway, I worked out what the problem was...

...the old PSU was installed upside down.

I can't remember why this was the case, but I remember there being a reason when I first put it in 7 years ago. It hadn't been a problem until I got a GPU that drew substantially more power, and I guess the ventilation was inadequate (it had *some*, but the dedicated vent that fed cool air to it was blocked). It also explains why this machine was so loud under load; it was drawing air through a fairly small gap - I thought it was the new GPU. Yes, I've made sure all of the case fans are operating, and temps are no different to what they were before. Anyway, it's possible that I could have just fixed the problem and stuck the old PSU back in and sent the new one back, but it's been operating for 7 years like that, so I figured it's probably best to just use the new one.

Anyway - tl;dr, 28 year old me may have been an idiot.

Nothing lasts forever, you made the right call. PSU expiration often takes everything else with it...

Yeah, I had one take out a mobo and a gpu both together once. Amazingly the cpu survived.
I didn't cheap out on it either, bequiet one that cost Β£100+ :(
