My son wants his first PC. He's 16.

He has seen this from his own research and seems set on it. Any opinions?

I can't see a way to configure it myself and 8gb RAM could probably be increases to 16 if I could.

Yeah, I'd definitely get a matching 8Gb stick to make use of that dual-channel.

Not sure how much it'd really be worth it considering the weaker end dual core CPU that's bundled in there. It's not going to be a powerhouse rig regardless of how much of a boost you get from doubling the RAM.

The CPU is a bottleneck being a 2 core chip. Your son is better off with a system with a i5 cpu for gaming. Like this one but it is another £300 on top for the CPU. It is 6 cores though.

but you can at least customise the pc with another 8gb of ram then.

But it really depends on what sort of use the pc is for and what your budget is bud :)

What I will say is that Chillblast are superb in terms of build and service. I have a Chillblast machine and was so pleased with the interaction with them as a supplier.

The old adage about the markup on custom built machines is definitely true though, I collected the machine personally as they are quite close to where I work (and I wanted to remove the risk of the delivery driver), and the owner's Ferrari 458 complete with the personalised plate 458 IT was parked outside...

Appreciating your lads £600 target (a friends nephew tried to rinse a £1500 PC out of his mother for a games design course only last week. We had a good laugh at that when we found the courses suggested specs).

As already stated, dual core isn't going to cut the mustard these days.
Don't forget Ryzen builds. For the most part, they are marginally less powerful for gaming, but come at a price that opens options to a 6GB 1060 instead of a 3GB 1050 which will make far more difference than the CPU ever will. And will still be a fair chunk of change cheaper than the equivalent Intel offering on Chillblast (spec for spec of course).

Have a tinker with this one, as well as the Gian's Red.

£777 with 16GB, AMD Ryzon 5 and a 1060. Drop the HDD for a better larger SSD. You can teach your Son how to build it too. The 1060 will make for a better gaming rig.
