Balls, new GFX card needed...

Hey techy minded folks.

So - my old GTX980 is making nasty burning plastic smells whenever I put it through any kind of paces, and then shutting off the display (i.e. shutting itself down to avoid damage). I have had it out of the PC and given it a good looking over, no dust build-up - the whole PC gets a good blast with an air duster once a month, so wasn't surprised at this. Looks like something internal is giving up the ghost in a rather warm way.

So - I am in the market for a new card.

I have had a looksee, and while the GeForce RTX 2080Ti looks the doggies danglers, I can't see that it is worth over a grand (up to £1500 at the moment depending on which model you buy) so it is a toss-up between the RTX 2080 non-Ti version or the GTX1080Ti. This is where you lot come in.

What would you recommend, ideally including a manufacturer/specific card? Cost is not a particular issue, I just want to buy the best card that will keep me in happy gaming for the longest time - happy to go up to around £750 if that is what it takes. Please no "But you would be better off waiting for the X that is just around the corner" as I really don't think that is going to be an option and Black Friday is likewise too far off.

EVGA make good cards by all accounts and good warranty.

There isn't really much difference between the 1080 TI, with fps gains in some games by upto 15 fps more with RTX 2080 or same. So the EVGA 1080 TI would save you £20 at being £799.99 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/evga-gef ... 12-ea.html

Jesus, £820. My last (and indeed current) GPU cost half that just two years ago, and it was a top-tier card of its time.

It was that or buy something that is already last-gen and possibly rue the purchase downstream though. I would rather bite the bullet now (although Ti costs can properly do one) sadly.

Nvidia just seem to be capitalising on the market demand. Normally in the tech world, a new version of a product will be a similar price to the previous one of the same tier, but these new GPUs are a full £200 more than the previous generation at the top end, and I don't think there's any justification for it.

And I wasn't trying to judge you on your spending Snowy, merely commenting on the market. My last full new PC build was £900, and while that didn't have a top tier GPU in it, it was no slouch.

I took a look at some custom builds just for interest and anything with a 20XX series card as prt of the build seems to have a starting price of around 3 grand. Seems pc gaming is getting ever more expensive!

I expect that it will settle down price-wise, it just happened that my card died at a perfectly inopportune time.

I think my worry is that I'm seeing plenty of comments saying the crypto mining boom is over, but the cards still seem to be increasing in price. I'm concerned that there's still enough of a market with cards priced as they currently are that Nvidia will see no reason to drop them again. There needs to be more competition.

Bought a 1070 in August for £390, currently £450 same retailer. I too was expecting a price drop for gtx cards after the rtx cards came out, but after so many reviews saying they weren't great bang for buck the opposite seems to have happened.

I noticed looking at cards over the last couple days, a lot of the stock is really low even on retailers like Scan and Overclockers. Not just the RTX cards but a lot of the 1080s as well.

Makes you wonder if Nvidia aren’t deliberately limiting supply to keep the prices high.

That said, with limited competition they can virtually set the price they like. What are the equivalent Radeon cards going at?

£470 for AMD 64 which is around 10-20 fps slower than the 1080 TI depending on the game. Buying the Sapphire Nitro version myself at the end of the month. I can justify that cost but certainly not the 1080 TI prices or the ludicrous 2080 TI ones. Which would be more than I spent for the entire pc I built recently.

Not wrong there Snowy about potentially underhanded shennigans about the pricing. nVidia has been doing a awful lot of shady shit recently that's came to light and only backed down from some of it from pressure.
