So Wizards showed off their new Unreal Engine 5-powered VTT today.

Anyone else think that looks vaguely unsatisfying? I can't quite put my finger on it as to why. Maybe it's partially because they've got 4 friends sharing a table and they're all staring at their laptops (which, granted, is basically the same as how we play), but there's just something that doesn't sit quite right with it being rendered in that much detail. I know plenty of work goes into creating 2D maps for our games, but they still leave space for imagination, and this feels like it takes away from that somewhat.

The problem for me is going to be limited assets. Typically when I create a map, I’ll take the base background map image and then add things to it, be it rubble to block off a stairwell I don’t want or a specific object, etc, and because you can add literally any image you want, it’s usually trivial to find something appropriate.

If you try and do that in a 3D environment, you either need your required item to be in the asset library or (if I’m being generous and assume there’s an option to import assets) someone needs to have created a model of what you want. I suspect that’s going to be limiting very quickly.

Yeah I'm not sure I'd be on board with using it either. Partly because it would feel like perpetually playing Divinity Original Sin from the look of it, but also I think it gamefies things too much and the experience would lose something. 2D maps give you just enough to get an idea of the layout of the place whilst leaving the actual details to your minds eye to imagine; they're also far easier to create custom ones for than having to worry about finding new 3D models to replace the stock ones on their new VTT.

I'll personally be sticking with 2D as I think it enhances the actual role playing experience more.

Yeah, zero interest in having it for our campaigns, really. I like having the 2D maps as they fill the gap between the mind's eye and letting combat play out practically, but by showing too much it would definitely lessen the experience. It becomes more about the miniatures than DM's narration and imagination. I don't really get the attraction.

I suppose it might appeal more to people who've never tried table-top roleplaying before. Wizards do seem to be going after the videogame crowd, and there's definitely some crossover in the experience that the two genres give. But it's a bit daunting going from an experience where a developer has (sometimes) given a lot of thought to and designed a new-player experience that eases a gamer in, to one that's largely freeform, and I think removing the need to imagine elements of an environment takes one of those hurdles away.

I'll cancel my plans if it means we're back in action for tomorrow!
