Also the heads of the US military would in all likelihood refuse to do it. He might threaten to reduce military spending but I doubt that would go very well for his health.
Re: Trump: Impeach is the new Orange
The man is trying to install a Fox News pundit as Defence Secratary. He can just remove those heads until he finds one that agrees with him. Sure, you might end up having Three Star Corporals instead of Generals, but I just don't see that being an issue.Animalmother wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 11:58 amAlso the heads of the US military would in all likelihood refuse to do it. There are so many theories rattling around my head this morning as to possible rationales for this... interesting turn of events; is this Trump & Putin's plan to dissolve NATO (does Europe really want to sabre rattle with the US, could NATO members pressure Denmark to give Greenland up leading to infighting and members leaving?), or just Trump's way of being expelled from the organisation so he doesn't have to be blamed for leaving? Then I have to take a step back and remember that Trump isn't all that bright, there probably isn't a rationale - I like to think of the inside of his head as that old DVD player screensaver where occasionally the sole braincell will perfectly hit the corner of the screen and release a load of endorphins.
And then I take a further step back and realise that we're actively discussing whether NATO could realistically go to war against its largest member and think just how unbelievably ludicrous this scenario would have felt 15 years ago. I remember back in 2016 when Trump first took office, John Oliver (of US satire show Last Week Tonight) told people to keep reminding themselves that "this isn't normal". Well we're into year 9 or 10 of Trump as a politician now, and frankly that sentiment doesn't feel correct anymore.

He might simply die of old age / poor health. And then we get to witness a JD Vance presidency and whatever the hell that would entail.
Re: Trump: Impeach is the new Orange
A lot of the absolute worst case scenario stuff people are getting worked up about would massively diminish America's standing as the global hegemon and hugely destabilize the world economy, invading allied NATO states basically on a whim is full on insanity.
Hopefully someone with some sense of preservation of the world order at the CIA will have him assassinated long before any of that becomes a reality.
More likely I think he'll spend four years sabre rattling at Europe and Ukraine will probably be massively screwed over, but the status quo won't change too much. He's going to have a more profound and lasting impact on the American people than us.
Honestly, he's not even been inaugurated yet and I'm absolutely sick to death of seeing headlines about him and Musk. Musk in particular needs to launch himself on a Mars mission and kindly fuck off for good.
I think I'm just going to stop reading the news for a few years and if the worst comes to pass and there's a nuclear war then at least it'll come as a surprise and I'll die quickly rather than having spent the previous x amount of months absolutely doom mongering about the state of western politics.

Yeah, I wasn't specifically focusing on this current Greenland/Canada stuff but everything. There seems to be a growing realisation that rule of law, regulation, governance is not in the way if you have enough money; that safeguards when tested aren't actually impactful. They just bought and finegled an election, after getting away with corrupting the last one they lost, but pretended otherwise. They have an iron grip on social communication of facts, any device that threatens their mind-war is emasculated into the clouds of ignorance. It seems all they have to do is broadcast how "the commies" are doing it, and the flock is happy not to contest. We have more of the same to anticipate: education is going to be even more under threat than we have seen, as is every other social safety net.
They. Want. Feudalism. It is cheaper to maintain their profit margin/growth, and cheaper to police.

I've been thinking about the Greenland thing some more and I'm beginning to think all Trump has done is put Denmark in an incredibly strong position. He's effectively gone into a car showroom and told the dealer which car he wants and that he's prepared to pay whatever it takes to get it. Denmark can go to the negotiating table, discuss exactly what Trump wants - whether it's stationing troops in Greenland, mining resources, etc - and stick a whopping price tag on it. He's already said he's prepared to buy the entire country so no price is likely to be too high. Would Greenland care if American troops are milling about or mining stuff they're not utilising themselves? Probably not.

Jr's stunt the other day has come under ridicule, they bribed some homeless people to pretend they were maga...no surprises there.

SCROTUS ruled 5-4 to allow his sentencing today in the NY hush-money case, although it doesn't look like he will meet any consequences worth anything...

I see it going one of two ways:Wrathbone wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 8:25 amI've been thinking about the Greenland thing some more and I'm beginning to think all Trump has done is put Denmark in an incredibly strong position. -Trump does his usual tactic of offering an absolute pittance for the entire country and then accuses Denmark of standing in the way of global security when they refuse. He'll insist on a deal being done in one meeting with a handshake across a big boardroom table instead of over multiple years between diplomats, and then he'll refuse to pay because he claims Denmark didn't do a good enough job on the road network before parking the 2nd Fleet off the coast.
-Trump inadvertently gives Denmark ownership of Louisiana, because he's heard someone on Fox refer to this opportunity as "Trump's Louisiana Purchase" and it was the one piece of information he could retain for that week.

There was something about Russia claiming Greenland was in their sphere of influence the other day, which was probably news to the people living there.

Good grief. This is the official portrait of the 47th President of the United States. It will hang in thousands of government offices.
I can't decide whether he's going for menacing or letting out a fart.
