I work in research finance, and I've had at least one academic lead approach me worried about their research grant that's US government funded. US federal funding for research projects is renewed annually, so even though there's an agreement for say a five year project, it can be cancelled after any one of those five. These aren't just jitters, there's an expectation that the US just won't fund research outside of their own borders anymore as it's US money not directly contributing to the US economy, even when we're partnering with a US university that will benefit from the work.

We don't have a massive number of projects funded like this, most of our funding comes from UK or EU research councils, but it's just another example of the global ramifications of Trump's short-sightedness.

Luckily the US has a massive prison population so I wouldn't be surprised to see a literal return to slave labour and people being arrested on the flimsiest of charges and sent to jail. A lot of it sounds like Musk making these decisions about the civil servants jobs.

Presumably, as Musk is not in an official government role, he can provide advice as to how the government makes these cut decisions and they can take that advice off-record? Or does the US government have to publish any advice it takes from 'DOGE'?

As I understand it he has an office in the whitehouse but has no public accountability.

The story points out that the tactic of asking people to email if they want to resign is very similar to how Musk handled the staff at Twitter when he took over, so it's evident that he's going to resort to the same playbook (perhaps tweaked to be a little more legal). I don't really know how you manage that sort of request; the story says that "millions" of employees will be receiving this offer, and that 10% of people are expected to take it. That's 200,000 emails over an 8 day period. Who the hell are they going to get to manage all of that? Nice to know that Musk is bringing the same level of thought and forward planning as he did with Twitter.

They also canceled all government funding yesterday and were surprised when it canceled all government funding and had to do some panic rolling back of their plans so funding could get to silly things like Medicaid. Oopsie!

It's safe to say this won't be affecting the funding for companies like Space X I assume?

This is what happened to the guy I mentioned above, he added that, by law, they're not allowed to pay out more than $25k pre-tax to any individual, and that whoever takes that deal will be massively fucked.

He went on to say that he intends to stay just out of spite

This is the most powerful nation in the world, and this scrote leads it. The level of delusion and ignorance that allows this kind of lying and misinformation to continue is breathtaking:

Funny how Mandelson has changed his mind on Trump since becoming ambassador to the US!

Next in the hellscape story: concentration camp on Guantanamo for 30,000 "illegal immigrants, who can't be trusted to be held in their native country"...the Island infamously known to be outside US and Cuban jurisdiction, and which only ever had a few hundred cells when used previously.

Trump has blamed the aircraft collision in Washington on DEI hiring policies in the FAA. The dead haven’t even all be accounted for yet and he’s exploiting a tragedy to further his political agenda (with zero evidence, of course). What a fucking wretch.
