We have got to the stage where it's impossible to tell if something is an April Fools joke or real with Trump. This is exactly like something he'd propose.eny wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2025 8:49 amIt seems that Clacton is finally going to see some benefit from Fascage's nasal nestling of the orange one's incontinent cleft...![]()

I think it's an indictment of the state of satire that you need to read fairly far into the article to work out whether it's actually an April Fools or not. Let's face it, Trump suggesting Clacton-on-sea should have a free port is not the most outlandish thing that he could do.

Back into reality, Senator Cory Booker is on hour 19 of his Senate filibuster and still speaking truth to power. I hope he beats segregationist Strom Thurmond's 24:18 'record'.

I'm sure Thurmond was allowed bathroom breaks where I dont think they arent any more? Does he have a colostomy bag? Ive always said that dude should be running for president, hes such a good orator and dosent seem like a wanker (like Newsom for example).

Goldwater arranged a break for Thurmond by requesting a yield to "insert for the congressional record" at 1am; he quickly went for a pee, then continued. It was his only break. Agreed on Cory, he would be a worthy president.

No idea who this man is but he's still talking.
Re: Trump: Impeach is the new Orange
Well here we go then. A general 10% tariff on all imports from all countries, the UK included, 20% from the EU, and 34% from China. I'm not going to pretend I know what this will do to the world's economies, but we'll see how long it takes Americans to start rioting when practically everything they buy goes up in price.

I did watch this interview from The Daily Show earlier, where a right-wing economist goes through the right's positions. Honestly I can see their point; it helps when these things are explained by someone professional and intelligent, and not an orange, populist ape. I think it's worth a watch.
The whole notion of tariffs is to "encourage" US companies to start producing and sourcing materials domestically. The problem is that they're ignoring the fact that you can't just establish new supply chains and manufacturing overnight. It's all well and good saying "oh, American companies will find it's cheaper to source goods from within the country now", but they're literally talking about domestic industries that the US allowed to die because cheaper labour and materials were available overseas. They do not have the manufacturing capacity locally. Trump's already binned the Biden-era semiconductor initiative that was supposed to kickstart US production of chips that practically every home appliance, vehicle, computer or other electronics use, because practically all of those come from the East at present. Just what the hell does he think will happen when suddenly all of these things are 10-34% more expensive? This is going to absolutely punish the poorest Americans, the people that put this moron in power.
And of course the real kicker from that interview above is that, while Trump is blaming literally everyone else in the world for "cheating" America, this is literally the system that America created.

Re: Trump: Impeach is the new Orange
I very much doubt Trump has even a basic grasp of global economics, his entire life has been that of a privileged rich dipshit. He's bankrupted several companies through mismanagement and fraud and is now making financial decisions for the world's biggest economy.
Re: Trump: Impeach is the new Orange
Don’t forget that four of his bankruptcies were casinos. He has the best bankruptcies; nobody’s ever bankrupted more casinos than him.
Re: Trump: Impeach is the new Orange
So I hate to side with the orange dobber but don’t we, the uk, have a flat tariff on all goods in the form of import tax? Higher than 10% too. That seems like its moderately ok? Am I mischaracterising that? Yeah it will drive up prices for Americans which they will no doubt get mad at but it reminds me of when they were going nuts at the price of petrol under Bidenu but when compared they were still paying half of what we pay at the pump.

Re: Trump: Impeach is the new Orange
My limited understanding is that there's nothing wrong with tariffs as a concept, it's just that he's deploying them with the poise and grace of a rhino doing Swan Lake. I think the accepted use is to protect domestic industries from cheaper foreign competition, not to coerce domestic industries into starting from scratch, which is what may be happening in the US.Alan wrote: ↑Thu Apr 03, 2025 1:50 amSo I hate to side with the orange dobber but don’t we, the uk, have a flat tariff on all goods in the form of import tax? There's a decent chance that the goals may be achieved in the long term, but it's going to likely lead to a lot of short term pain for American consumers. I also expect this is just another attempt to force companies into bribing him to give them exemptions.
Re: Trump: Impeach is the new Orange
Thing is there won't be a long-term, assuming they even last that long I'd imagine there's a strong chance they get overturned by whoever comes after him in a few years' time.

Re: Trump: Impeach is the new Orange
It's going to hit Americans harder than they probably think. If they do as Trump says and buy an American car, for instance, that car is still going to be made from imported materials that are subject to tariffs. If they buy American food, that food may well have been grown using imported fertlizer and farmed using imported equipment. Their economy is a massive global web - it's practically impossible to find American products that are not in some way reliant on imported goods that are now going to be more expensive.
It's Liz Truss levels of economic idiocy.

Re: Trump: Impeach is the new Orange
Oh I’m not defending the nuts tariffs just the 10% universal. I watched a clip of Maddow last night where she was going on about “lol, trumps saving America by adding a 10% tariff to this uninhabited island and this volcano and this…. olololol!” Which was cringe as fuck. If he had just came out and said “10% universal tariff which will help us look after our kids and elderly” I feel people could get behind that. It would have been a lie of course , it would be to fund tax breaks for himself but he could have said it anyway.
