If he had just came out and said “10% universal tariff which will help us look after our kids and elderly” I feel people could get behind that. It would have been a lie of course , it would be to fund tax breaks for himself but he could have said it anyway.

My understanding of this is admittedly rudimentary (and quite possibly wrong), but I believe they can't simply 'call in' debts as the debt is held in the form of US treasury bonds, which Japan or China would have to sell off. Assuming they did, that would likely crash the dollar and cause a global financial crisis. It's good for nobody, and I'd like to think whatever remaining voices of sense there are in the US gov would attempt to prevent it getting to that point. Or it might all go to shit.

Agreed. They don't care about anybody but themselves and they just want to hurt people as much as possible. Who cares if it destroys the American economy and plunges them into a recession, at least everyone will be feeling as poor and hard done by as then. That's the absolutely toxic, backwards and self destructive thinking of his supporters. Hell, they will happily make themselves even poorer if it means they can "own the libs" a bit more.
