Re: D&D Campaign 2: D&D Harder
I've been waiting to hit third level spells for a while now. Our next battle should be fun.
Re: D&D Campaign 2: D&D Harder
Level 5 you say....
This song incidentally is the origin point for my wanting to try playing a necromancer; it randomly came up on Spotify around the time we were talking about planning for this campaign.
I think my only experience with mind flayers was in the first Critical Role campaign, and the way that Mercer described the way it started boring its way into a characters skull to get to the tasty innards was so effectively unsettling that it completely overrode my natural aversion to spending spell slots.
Level 5 is when cantrips suddenly double their dice rolls too (I guess to match the double attack feature that martials get).

I did realise after it grappled Farley that there was a solid chance it could actually devour his brain in one or two rounds if he didn’t break free. Maybe the hat could have acted as a shield from the brain detaching completely?
Re: D&D Campaign 2: D&D Harder
I get some really cool abilities in the next couple of levels as well, so might have to put off a fighter level dip for a while longer!

I've wanted to do something with mind flayers in for years so that was a nice, albeit terrifying, surprise last night. There's something super sinister about their lovecraftian vibe and the fact that if they suck your brain out you're pretty much done for that makes them even scarier than your regular monster.
They were going to feature heavily as a part of the plot of Lady Fortune originally before I cut them as I thought they deserved a much bigger role in a main campaign.

It's the body horror stuff that gets me - getting your brain sucked out after they drill through your skull while you're still conscious just sounds like a particularly horrible way to go.
Re: D&D Campaign 2: D&D Harder
That was a really great session, I didn't see that coming one bit
I was never in doubt someone would rescue Farley from its clutches but VERY glad I got that resistance armour.
I've got a better inspiration roll and some fun new spells to try out

Re: D&D Campaign 2: D&D Harder
I'm glad someone was confident, because I was bricking it when it grabbed him! I wasn't sure if I had anything that would break the grapple. I was considering enlarging Farley as it would have given him advantage on strength saves, but I wasn't sure if Mind Flayers grappled using strength. Am I right in thinking the extra d4 from Bless was used in the escape? I feel like that spell paid for itself (it came from the feat I took) on the first casting.
Re: D&D Campaign 2: D&D Harder
Bless 100% turned the tide in that battle to the extent that I think it could have been a grisly outcome without it. There were at least three marginal d20 rolls where the Bless roll pushed it over the required number.
Re: D&D Campaign 2: D&D Harder
We might need to start pre-buffing if we think there's a fight coming up

Re: D&D Campaign 2: D&D Harder
Bless is pretty great for a first level spell, especially given I can cast it once a day without using a spell slot (and then normally using spell slots, unlike some of the other spell-granting feats). I wouldn't get too used to it though, I actually took it to boost minions who'll probably need it more than the rest of the party does, and I'm not sure how often it'll get used when there are so many other spells contending for Opus' concentration.
