So what exactly did the US just shoot down above Alaska?

No signs of active propulsion, "cylindrical and silver-ish gray and seemed to be floating" and the size of a small car.

"It came in, inside our territorial waters, those waters right now are frozen, but inside territorial airspace and over territorial waters. Fighter aircraft assigned to U.S. Northern Command took down the object within the last hour,"

Biden isn't messing around any longer when it comes to foreign objects. Thoughts?

It'll be another balloon I'd think, regardless of whether they're saying it or not. At least with a balloon there's plausible deniability that it drifted off course, as opposed to a spy drone that would need to be guided to a specific area. They lost face with their hesitance to destroy the first one when it was already over the US landmass (for fairly logical reasons), so they'll probably just be destroying them before they pose any threat to air traffic or people on the ground.

Another one’s been shot down over northern Canada, also at 40,000ft.

It’s obviously not some random floating debris like a stray balloon then. If they are spy balloons then 40,000ft is a weird height for them as that’s a standard cruising altitude for civilian airliners. Those sorts of balloons I think go at 100,000ft or more to avoid detection. Doesn’t seem likely they’re drones either as the statement for the first one said there were no obvious means of propulsion.

I’ll admit, something feels odd about all this!

Possibly some kind of ramjet cylinder test surveillance object, let's keep to logic...

Again, though, why would surveillance objects be positioned at the most likely high altitude for them to be noticed? The fact that both of them were at 40,000ft suggests they were at that height intentionally.

EDIT - Thinking about it, it could be that they were put there with the intention of being found, e.g. Russia is trying to stir the US-China tensions to take pressure off themselves.

Were it a Tesla it'd probably already have crashed itself.

I mean, surely this is just propaganda on China's part as a response?
