Mr. Spinney retired from the show in October 2018 and was replaced by his longtime Big Bird understudy, Matt Vogel.

weirdly in June I listened to his segment on Desert Island Discs and I thought "what happened to David Bellamy"

I used to get him and Gerald Durrell mixed up, partly due to a visit to Jersey Zoo as a kid.
