I'm not familiar with the area, but my best guess would be that it's some petty local trying to stop people parking up on the nearby B road to take photos of it. Whatever the reason, I don't understand how people can do this to an iconic landmark, a tree that's probably a hundred or more years older than the perpetrator. I'm sure some would balk at the title, but it was voted "Tree of the Year" in a country famous for its forests.

In a way you have to admire his tenacity, I committed my share of drunken acts of vandalism in my youth, but restricted to anything that took less than 0.5 seconds to accomplish, never mind taking the time and effort required to fell a goddamned tree...

It did look very amateur, with not a deep enough throat cut, or enough left for the hinge, but he used white spray paint that suggests some knowledge from somewhere...what a fucking travesty.
