I really don't know why he didn't stand aside in favour of William, what's the point?
Selfishness? Anyway, I agree — seems pointless to put someone in the position so late, we'll definitely be seeing William's one sooner rather than later, and he's already 40…

Millions spent on them when some mere mortals have to rely on food banks is appalling.
Eeeeehhh, but how much do they bring in through tourism, stability, and other crap? It's not as clear-cut as people on both sides of the argument want it to be. There's no reason we can't have a coronation and stop people from needing food bank help, they're not really linked due to how "The Budget" is split.

We showed our kid the actual crown going-on, and some of the military parade. Impressive stuff, but the absolute definition of ostentatious. Mostly ridiculous "TrADitIoNs".

The amount they bring in money through tourism doesn't really wash as an argument when you consider how much more money we'd bring in if we gave the National Trust the vast swathes of land and property that they owned and opened it all up for public access. Nobody comes to the UK to actually see the King, they come to see the outside of Buckingham Palace. Turn it into a museum and charge people a tenner to enter, we'd rake it in.

Neither does the argument about the stability they provide. There's plenty of other western democracies that have a head of state that doesn't rule by divine right and they're in better shape than we are as a country.

The govt would have to buy all that land though, they can't just take it from people else we'd all be fucked.

You're right this country is a mess, but I don't think upheaving the monarchy is going to improve things in the short term.

For once in recent times, John Cleese has spoken some sense and pointed out that with all the silly costumes and everyone involved treating it very, very seriously, it was basically a Python sketch. They even passed the holy hand grenade around!

Good point. She was respected worldwide and the only good thing about the Monarchy, they couldn't exactly put her out with the bins.

It's a bit rich* though isn't it that one of the world's richest families make the public pay to bury one of their own during a time of national cost of living crisis?

Can’t believe he actually used the phrase ‘witch hunt’ in his resignation speech. He really is Britain Trump.

How thick are these people? If you're going to break the laws that you've imposed on the public, don't send out actual invites to the crime. #-o

The entitlement gatekeeping from the usual cess-pit dwellers is something to behold — honours list for the dishourable, Javid's copper brother finding nothing wrong in the investigation, Carrie's friends and former fuckers all involved in the quagmire of vanity...it all stinks, and is anything but leadership.

Same here. When it's all laid out like that, it's dismaying that there are still people who claim he "got the big calls right" when it came to covid.
