Going Veggie (Temporarily)

Thought about giving this a trial run a number of times, but a trip to Sainsbury's tonight has swung it.

It's (probably) not forever, and it might not go well, but I'm going to give it a shot. Reasoning is two-fold. We're killing the planet and I'm fat.

Are there any vegetarians on the forum? Recommended dishes? Tips?

I've started eating vegetarian meals recently purely because of the cost savings. I've been eating a lot of home made chow mein, and making it with peppers, spring onions, carrot and mushrooms (the sauce is quite simple; dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, a bit of garlic and ginger paste, that's it, though I've also been sticking a little bit of homemade sweet and sour in with it too). I think noodles make for a fairly satisfying meal even without a meat component.

I started incorporating a lot more meat free meals into my diet midway through last year, mainly due to the price of meat, plus for the general health benefits and to be slightly more eco-friendly. I was eating meat every day prior to that and it's pretty unnecessary really.

If you like spicy food then sticking hot chili into as many dishes as possible always keeps you entertained. All the various types of beans and peas are a good way of adding a bit more of a wholesome feeling to any meals, adding nuts works surprisingly well for a lot of dishes too. Most regular meals that you'd normally eat work perfectly well in vegetarian form.

Although I eat meat most days I do throw in the occasional veggie dinner, as my wife has been vegetarian for about 25 years. Like tonight, in fact. One of the regular things in our rotation is ratatouille - aubergines, courgettes, red pepper, onion, garlic in a tomato-based sauce, wrapped in a wholemeal flour pancake. I add a pinch of chili to mine to add a bit of pep. It's pretty nice.

Vegan for 7 or 8 years. Still fat -_-

Never been an easier time than now to cut meat out. The supermarkets have massively upped their game in the last year. Sainsbury’s and M&S especially.

Biggest quick bit of advice is Quorn is rank, don’t buy it. Hideous aftertaste. Was a bit disappointed the much publicised Greggs vegan sausage roll was Quran based. The mask the aftertaste fairly well but it’s still there.

peppers, spring onions, […] and mushrooms
aubergines, courgettes, red pepper
🤢

I can't stand red/yellow/etc bell peppers. They're utterly revolting. Mushrooms can get to fuck and all.

I tried going vegetarian for a while, back in late 2007.

Then one night, New Year's Eve, I was out and about many, many miles from home, and desperately hungry as all the restaurants were closed.

Then, in the town square, surrounded by a heavenly light, I found a stall selling ANGUS STEAK BURGERS.

I was so hungry I DEVOURED one! I loved it so much that I forsook vegetarianism and never returned.
