The Room 101 thread - for things you hate or just having a bloody good moan

I'd honestly look into taking legal action, Doug.

Yeah, thinking about it. Not quite sure how to go about it.

I'm no expert either, but a reasonable first step might be speaking to the Citizen's Advice Bureau.Stormbringer wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2019 8:35 pmYeah, thinking about it. Not quite sure how to go about it.

That's absolutely shocking!
Heads should roll tbh, even the ones that are properly attached.
Let us know how you get on with Citizen's Advice on Monday.

I'm pretty sure that's criminal negligence mate. At least your alright
Re: The Room 101 thread - for things you hate or just having a bloody good moan
I'd stick it on some social media platform as well if the legal route doesn't work out. Companies hate bad publicity.
Re: The Room 101 thread - for things you hate or just having a bloody good moan
Omfg. I'm with the others mate, legal that shit up. Glad you're all OK.

Yeah, a good Twitter-blast will shake them up, but keep your powder dry till you have spoken to the CAB...
That is horrendous, especially for someone who is already a nervous driver.
A friend of my family was killed by something like this, a wheel detached on the opposite side of the motorway, bounced over the central reservation and straight through the windscreen, can you imagine how the driver must feel when something like that happens, to know they were in some way responsible? Never mind what could have happened to you and your family - you did bloody well to get that car stopped without spinning or rolling it. They should be on fucking bended knee to you, not leaving you stranded!

That is terrible, Snowy.
In my case it was providential that, even though it had been working loose since we set off, it only actually fell off while we were stationary at the give-way point on the roundabout, rather than at high speed on the motorway!

It sounds like perhaps the bolts holding the wheel on broke one after another (one breaking puts more strain on the others); it would explain why the problem seemed to get gradually worse. The wheel impacting the kerb when you pulled onto the verge probably broke the final one.
Regardless of exactly what happened, proper maintenance should have prevented it. Whoever is responsible for maintaining the car is surely liable here.

Glad you are all ok Doug, that would be scary even for the experienced drivers among us. Whoever took that wheel off last only finger tightened the nuts/studs, and didn't put the final torque in them...they've slowly vibrated loose (left hand wheels would loosen with rotation, right hand keep them tight) and fallen out, aided by the wheel popping off the location rim and causing the eccentric wobble.....
Cautionary tale here though.....out of the ordinary sounds or vibration are telling you something - slowly and quietly at first - until you listen and have a look....do it sooner rather than wait for catastrophic failure, it might stay repairable if nothing else....

It was a good lesson learned indeed!
Also, on the flipside, the trip actually boosted my driving confidence, rather than crushing it. I am actually looking forward to getting behind a wheel again, though I am not sure when this will be.
