It's yet another problematic side of social media - we now expect people who produce interesting work to be interesting 100% of the time, when in reality most people have moments of brilliance amidst a vast sea of mundanity.

I think this is a good point. There was one author I followed, back in 2013, whose work I had really enjoyed back in the 90s. His Twitter contributions were 90% ranting about contemporary politics and religion (which was super off-putting) and 10% talking about all the great work he'd done back in 1991, which came across as a desperate attempt to stay relevant.

However, it was a very important lesson to me not to think an actual person is great, just because they once produced some great art.
So, you didn't learn that lesson after reading Lovecraft? ;)

I was deeply mentally disturbed around the time I was first reading HPL, so no, that took me longer to work out. ¬_¬

My biggest problem with social media etc is that everyone knows when you're online or have read a message.

Sometimes you just need a bit of peace but it's always "I CAN SEE YOU READ THIS FOUR HOURS AGO."

There is no such thing as being switched off in the digital age.
Bollocks isn't there. Here's a suggestion, if you don't want people to know you read something… don't read it! Either that or don't have read receipts on. Leave your phone behind, or disable notifications at the very least.

And that's the story of why I'm not allowed near pregnant women for the next few weeks.

I think the problem with things like Facebook messenger is that you can't disable read receipts (as far as I know). I'm in one of those insufferable group chats where there's occasional pertinent information about organising stuff and the rest of the time it's inane drivel. But I also have other people on messenger who I arrange stuff with semi-regularly, which is the only reason I don't ditch it (or notifications) entirely. One of these days I'll get the final message that causes me to flip - probably someone in the group chat at 3am posting a gif of someone I don't know for an in-joke I've missed - and I'll rage-quit Facebook. I hope it comes sooner rather than later.

Can't you just make the decision to quit that one group without the rage?

Like I said, there is occasional stuff in there which is relevant to me - it's the classic case of not wanting to miss out on something that everyone else in your social circle is aware of.

And anyway, rage can be a good thing from time to time. Some things deserve a bit of rage. :)

You could just abandon your social circle and become a reclusive hermit, thus negating any requirement to be a part of that group.

I quit Facebook in 2008. I am so ahead of the curve.

Here's another thing:

Grammarly adverts. Almost as annoying as Honey adverts. Have Google signed some sort of deal with these guys that means they're the only adverts that play on YouTube?

It's not like I'm a fan of any adverts at all, but now I ONLY get these ones.

Serious question. Adverts on youtube? I don't see any. Do they play during videos or just on the page?

Maybe my adblocker is better than I thought.

Every time I load up a video, they play at the start. I don't have any adblockers in place. Maybe this is a signal that I ought to get one. ¬_¬

Was thinking similar, don't get these types of ad.

What with watching 99% of my telly now on Netflix, Prime or iPlayer I don't really get ads of any description, pretty much the only place is when I watch Taskmaster on Dave's demand service.

I only seem to get adverts on Twitch but I'm not there very often as live video is usually crap compared to at least semi curated stuff on youtube.
