The amount of hoops you have to jump through to cancel online subscriptions for things does my head in. I've just tried to pause my Humble Bundle for the month and you have to click about six times to actually pause it. One wrong click and you're back to the start of the process.

"Are you sure?"
"Yes"
"Would you like to NOT cancel?"
"No"
"Really?"
"Yes"
"Would you like a discount?"
"No"

So many services are like this and it's such a ball ache.

Not as bad as Beer 52 mind you, who literally don't have an online process and you have to ring their helpline and wait in a queue for half an hour before being harassed by an angry customer sales rep who almost refuses to let you cancel.

Last year I signed up for a single month free trial of NOW tv so Christina could try it out on her then new smart tv, I made sure I opted out of any continued payment plan once the trial period was done and proceeded to put it to the back of my mind I would not be charged further. After getting my first bank statement in a while I spotted that NOW tv had not actually cancelled and set on to a full subscription taking payments of £9.99 a month from my account for an entire year - without any of us even using the service. Christina was no longer using it and indeed had not since last year, I checked.

So I contacted them and they agreed there was an error not on my part and would look into it refunding me of any costs. Today I got a message from them saying they were indeed going to refund me, but not for the full twelve months I paid for without knowing - for just three, with the message clearly stating £9.99x3 and to update my card so they could process it.

Robbing bastards.

Don't stand for it mate, they are reneging on an agreed refund in the hope you will just suck it up - don't do so. Get back on to them, absolutely furious, and tell them you want the full amount refunded. Not your error means not your error, not "we will give you back 25% of not your error but we will keep the rest.

Threaten them with the ombudsman if you don't immediately get the result you expect and follow it up if they don't play ball (but they will). https://www.ombudsman-services.org/sect ... unications

Burnout. It's hit me hard this week, not for any one thing but more like death from a thousand cuts due to endless social obligations that I can't reasonably avoid, financial hits, family debacles (nothing terrible, just interview and childcare problems on my sister's side), acute work pressure, etc. I thought this week was clear with no commitments, so I could unwind a bit and recharge, but now I've been reminded that a friend is going for birthday drinks tomorrow - a friend who came out for my birthday recently and was far too generous, so of course I'm going. I'd rather just lie face down on the floor for several hours, truth be told.

What we need is a socially-acceptable "everybody please fuck off and leave me alone for a bit" signal, which is valid regardless of what you're batting away.

Pop into the TGA Discord when you have a little time mate, Game Organising subsection. You will find a bunch of us live in there, keeping one another sane and often indulging in co-op fun in the evenings.

Cheers mate, I'm on there from time to time for D&D, but if a day comes when I'm not being badgered for things by people then I may drop in. ;)

It certainly would have helped me over the last decade or so. I've been operating at pretty reduced capability for a long time, and thankfully most of my acquaintances know it by now, but social pressure can frankly sod right off in those situations. Eventually I just stopped letting it bother me, knowing that if I don't focus on myself at times it'd only make things worse. You just have to learn to be a bit selfish which if you're anything like me isn't easy, but it's a necessary self-care step. Explain to people that you're burnt out and need some self time.

I certainly have done that in the past, not necessarily from burnout but simply because I'm in my late 30s and I don't feel like heading out to socialise to the same extent that I did in my 20s. This last month has had an unusual number of social events that I couldn't avoid without really pissing off some close friends, which I didn't want to do. After tomorrow I'm barring the door for the rest of October.

Just Stop Oil, the artist formerly known as Extinction Rebellion.

I support them overall, although I do believe that the human race's being incapable of not acting selfishly will probably cause our extinction regardless (and as the dominant species we have made a right fucking mess of it all).

However.

Don't throw fucking soup over treasured works of art, it only plays into the hands of the very organisations you are trying to influence, you colossal flutes.

There is a case that this sort of "rebellion" is a subversion funded by big oil...the idea being to foster hate and take all the power out of net-zero. Just like "umbrella-man" and BLM. It certainly is not fostering support from where it is needed. It is cowardly because it doesn't focus on the industry itself, but on targets who have no reason for preparedness for such actions. It stinks and is crass and impotent.

It's pretty sneaky, they must have known the piece was behind glass, but none of the stories bother mentioning that so there's a constant tick-tock of "OUTRAGE!" "well actually it's behind glass" "oh really? Hmm, interesting" that gets everyone talking about it.

If you don't happen to get the "it's not damaged" news though, it makes them look like colossal bell-ends which harms their entire cause.

Not sure if genius or downright stupid.

I've been laid up with a nasty chest infection the last couple of days. Trying to use my PC last night for a short period, I coughed so hard I was sent forward as something in my chair broke and took me right along with it. I tried to tell people who had severe sounding coughs not to come around as Christina had already been off school ill, not until they had properly got rid of it, but no they still had to come coughing and spluttering all over the damn place. Why don't people bloody listen?

Oh man, I know the feeling. I've got a heavy cold which was 99.99% a result of me going out for a friend's birthday drinks last Thursday in a group that included two people who were joking about how bad their colds were. Well stay bloody home then, you selfish bastards! :x
