From the article:

"Somebody else just showed me their leg, which was covered in Peaky Blinders character tattoos. It's very humbling and gratifying that it's had this effect on people."

Yup, load up that tattoo shotgun and blast away!

Cereal packaging. It's fucking useless.

The flap bit at the top of the box that's meant to keep it closed? Useless.

The flimsy cardboard on supermarket brands which means the box will never stay upright once opened? Useless.

The way the final bowl is going to be a horrible, claggy mess due to the powdered remains lurking at the bottom? Useless.

The shitty bags that tear when opened or, as has just happened to me now and prompted this rant, burst open at the bottom from the sheer weight of the disappointing woodchip flakes within, thereby eradicating any hope of them remaining fresh unless I buy one of those obnoxious plastic cereal containers like a twat? :x Useless.

You're absolutely right about that. Also, my kids eat so much cereal that we go through that whole ordeal about once every day!

Always thought you were the most likely PW member to create a cereal killer.

Oh man. As the kids say, triggered.

Nothing personal, but that phrase is one of the most hateful, patronising, dismissive sayings of the modern age. I get that it's meant to put things in perspective, but what it actually comes across as is "there are worse problems in the world, so your problem doesn't matter."

Yes, of course there are worse problems in the world. There are always worse problems. If I had a terminal illness, there would still be some poor sod with a worse problem with me. And while rubbish cereal packaging is clearly low on the scale of global issues, it is nevertheless a nuisance, and the existence of much direr issues does not stop it from being a nuisance.

(In this particular case, it probably is a valid use of the phrase. My hatred of it stems from other cases, such as when I dislocated my knee a few years ago and was moaning about how I could only get socks on with a coat hanger due to the blinding pain and inability to bend my leg, and some arse suggested that was a first world problem. Yes, compared to someone who has lived their entire life in poverty in a war-torn nation, lost their entire family and then slowly died in horror as their house collapsed on them due to bombing, my struggle with socks pales somewhat. But having my relatively stressful situation boiled down to "first world problems" made me incandescent with rage. Unfortunately I couldn't hop after the culprit fast enough. :x )

In this case, it was jokingly applied, and more to myself -- the idea that I'm complaining about the nuisance of cereal packaging being amplified in my case because my kids devour cereal like a plague of locusts, when in some parts of the world people's kids don't even have a single bite of cereal to eat at all, and die of malnutrition before they even reach my kids' age.

Sparingly used it does put somethings into perspective - like complaining the wifi is a bit iffy or mcdonalds forgot to put a ketchup sachet in my bag. However things like injuries or similar - no way.

Social media.

Started out as a good idea for helping people keep in touch and made life easier for sharing things with friends.

Now I'm convinced it's destroying everything about our culture and society. Not only has it been massively commercialised and become hyper corporate, it's also used to pedal propaganda and manipulate scores of people, plus made it easier for radical racist groups to communicate and attract new members.

It's also turned 95% of 13-35 year olds into neurotic, narcissistic douchebags. I loathe 'influencer' culture. It's making so many people depressed because they constantly compare themselves to the idealised, picturesque lives that are presented on there. People can't even prepare themselves a meal now without feeling the need to take a photo of it and upload it to Instagram with some sort of stupid hashtag.

I kind of want to create an Instagram account and upload every photo I take on my phone (about once a month) with zero curation, as a concerning glimpse into reality that influencers don't offer. The last year of sparse, confusing subject matter includes an all-day breakfast microwave meal (don't ask), the underside of a boiler, a blurred photo of the layout of HDMI sockets on the back of a TV, a tiny horse that looked like Lil' Sebastian from Parks and Rec and one of an empty Tesco car park. It's truly rousing stuff.

The point, if any, is that social media does not present reality yet pretends it does and so is dangerous, and reality is usually not worth inflicting on the world, so the only real benefit to anyone of social media is its commercial exploitation of relationships, popularity and visibility.

Did I say anyone? I meant powerful businesses with zero ethical concerns or accountability.

All right! Social Media bashing! Get ready for another OMYAC rant from me:

One thing I really get irritated by on Social Media (and I know this seems pretty pathetic, because there's LOADS of more significant things that are irritating about Social Media, but hear me out) is when people do this thing where they take a photo on their phone of a widely-available "nerd" product they've recently ordered from Amazon, like a comic book or a card game, or something like that, and they make a tweet where they post this photo of said product, with the words: "Look what the postman just brought me!" (or something along those lines) above it, as if somehow the postman, out of the kindness of his heart, just magically brought this wonderful object for them to make them happy, like Santa Claus, and not because it's the postman's job to deliver the packages that they, the consumer, ordered two days ago. Totally mundane, every day thing. Not a story. What's worse is when said tweet gets loads of likes and retweets, as if the arrival of this item is some fantastical life-changing event or personal achievement of merit. I'm always tempted to reply, when I see these tweets: "Yay! Well done! You ordered a mass-produced commercial product via a multi-billion-dollar retail corporation and it arrived today because the delivery service actually works. I'm so happy for you!" BUT I DON'T because that would be rude, so I just rant about them on a gaming forum instead! :x

I guess that doesn't annoy other people. ¬_¬

How about this: people who walk up to pedestrian crossings and automatically press the button to trigger the traffic lights without even needing to.

This happened this morning. Woman walks up to the crossing, hits the button, EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE NO CARS, then crosses the road while the red man is still displaying... because there were no cars! Apparently she didn't bother to work that out before just automatically hitting the button. YET, because she hit the button, 10 seconds later the red light triggers and three or four cars are stopped FOR NO REASON AT ALL!!!

Before I cross a road, I always check if there are any cars coming. If there are no cars, there's no point hitting the button is there? Peds: don't waste drivers' time for no reason.

On the subject of pedestrian crossings, drivers who see the lights changing and speed up to get through them. There are marginal cases where it's justified - e.g. if stopping at the lights would mean braking so hard that it's dangerous for the drivers behind - but generally there's little excuse. It happened to me this morning, where I and several others were waiting at either side of the crossing, and I saw the lights change so checked to make sure the traffic was stopping. One lane did, but in the other lane there was a van that slowed down to a crawl (causing a couple of people to step into the road) and then decided to make a break for it and floored it through the lights on red. He could see the people already trying to cross.

I'd like to say this was a rare occurrence, but I see it in Lancaster probably on a weekly basis. The terrible one-way system causes some drivers to lose all courtesy and sense.

A few months ago on the way to school myself and my two daughters were nearly mown down (literally, I had to yank them back by their hoods to get them back out of the way) by a woman doing exactly this. I'd clocked the car but it was a good 50-feet from the lights when cars in the other lane were slowing down (presumably seeing amber), then the girls saw the green man and started to cross. The light must have turned red for her well before she reached it.

Absolutely no flicker of recognition of the carnage she'd nearly caused on the face of the driver as she sailed past us at 40mph, she didn't slow down one iota.
