Re: The Room 101 thread - for things you hate or just having a bloody good moan
Waking up in the night, not being able to get back to sleep, and suffering anxiety attacks. It's been happening for the last three or four nights in a row. I would rather have a boxing match with Captain Birdseye, to be honest.

The above serves me right for going to bed at a normal time. The only way to avoid this fate, it seems, is to go to bed after midnight.

Kindle ereader software.
Why is it only a bawhair better than it was in the first gen kindle? Why can you not automatically arrange books into a subtree of author? Why are collections still such a massive headache to setup? Why do they make kindles with enough storage for thousands and thousands of books yet make having more than 6 a nightmare to navigate? Are they in a deal with Microsoft to make the Xbox One dash seem well designed in comparison? What a great device, what piss poor software!

Electoral post.
It might just be my local council, but I always seem to have envelopes being delivered (brown paper with DO NOT IGNORE THIS LOAD OF OLD COCK written on it) wanting me to confirm over and over that my wife and I live in our fucking house.
I reckon they could afford to carve a statue of me flipping the council office the bird while mooning them with the amount they must spend, if everyone gets sent the same amount of needy bollocks.

There's something else that bothers me, possibly even more than suggesting that the postman randomly brings you nice stuff.
It's when people speak about "picking up" stuff when what they actually mean is "buying" it. You don't just "pick up" something, you PURCHASE it.
Between this and the postman nonsense, it's almost as if people are afraid to talk about spending their own cash.

Although I have no evidence to support it, I can imagine that "picking up the shopping/groceries/supplies/whatever" stems from the time when wealthy families had servants to sort out everything for them, so you would have someone who went to pick up [item] and then the actual payment would happen at another time.

FFS, posted that on my phone, stupid autocorrect.

Good theory, but I've only heard people use this phrase in the last few years. And to be fair, it's always among the board-gaming/wargaming community. That might just be because I have very limited contact with other human beings who aren't on the internet, and most of those tend to be board-gamers/wargamers. ¬_¬Strudel wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2019 12:08 amAlthough I have no evidence to support it, I can imagine that "picking up the shopping/groceries/supplies/whatever" stems from the time when wealthy families had servants to sort out everything for them, so you would have someone who went to pick up [item] and then the actual payment would happen at another time.
Examples:
"I picked up a copy of the new Age of Sigmar rules last week!"
"Check out these new trolls from Otherworld Miniatures! Will you be picking these up?"

I think that is an expression that I use a lot.

It's probably something you just pick up.

The best I could find during my limited etymological search last night was that it was popular in the mid-1900s in the US so it's certainly been around a while.

Situations that make you look like a dick when, technically, you've done nothing wrong.
A colleague was on holiday yesterday, which coincided with a planned day of meetings from hell, so naturally my greeting this morning was a coy "How was your strategically-timed day off?", with full Monty Python nudge-wink accompaniments.
"I was at a funeral."
FFS.
