The Room 102 thread - for things you love or just having a bloody good praise!

I don't have kids, so get some of these, but I still tend to have things I have to do that eats most of my weekend.

I had a proper look at the casinos last night, had a go on some slot machines. I now feel I appreciate more why people get addicted to gambling, and also why people lose so much in Vegas.
Every casino has a really confusing layout, nothing makes any logical sense and it's all poorly signposted so it sends you around in circles and keeps you gambling. There's no windows, no clocks and workers constantly giving you free drinks. And an aside you're allowed to smoke in a casino, which meant I choked every 2 minutes.
I gotta confess, I got bored of it pretty quickly. I set myself a money limit and I don't think I'm going to go near it.
Ah well, pool day and helicopter ride tomorrow
Edit: oh yeah, 10 hours in economy class is a no no.

I'm assuming they don't keep plying you with free drinks if you're clearly only spending a dollar an hour on slot machines?

If you're on a slot machine, it's free drinks far as I can tell. Looks likes there's a keep bums on seats policy.

Sounds like the absolute antithesis of a place I'd like to go, to be honest.
Between tedium and fright
Such is the song of the nether world
The hissing of rats
And the jarring chants of angels

Vegas has always sounded like a literal nightmare to me; I don't enjoy crowds, I don't enjoy gambling, and I don't enjoy ...fake things (which I appreciate is a bit vague).

If you enjoy watching a completely crazy circus (and you can choose to stand and watch) it's cool. On the plus side, grand canyon trip tomorrow and a couple of hours ago I had my first ride in a helicopter over the city.
Off to San Francisco on Friday.

gambling for me has never interested me but what I do find fascinating is why people (especially the Chinese) get so addicted to this rubbish. Chips with $200 or $500 get thrown down with every bet and I am thinking I am saving up to buy a 4K TV that costs a £1K and someone just bet that amount in 5 seconds and lost.
Different worlds.

I don't get Vegas at all, been a couple of times now, once in the early 90's as a road-trip from LA where I was working, and once for my brother-in-law's wedding about 12 years ago. For me it offers fake entertainment and every aspect of it is designed to leech money out of you.
Add to that every single resort is the same. Your first walk down the strip is nuts, you walk past a castle, a hotel with a rollercoaster built into it, the Bellagio dancing fountains roaring as they power water into the air, a half scale Eiffel Tower, a pyramid. Then you go in and realise every single one is the same. Same shops (if sir has to ask, sir can't afford), same food, same noise, same dead-eyed folks losing their shirts, just with a different theme painted on.
Go out at night and it is the same, except every ten feet or so along the strip is a hispanic fella (no racism, it just always seemed the hispanics) with these decks of call-girl cards. They do this thing where they tap them twice into an open hand then thrust them at you. Every few yards, tap-tap-thrust, tap-tap-thrust.
It is just not for me, it is all so seedy and desperate under the thinnest veneer.
On the gambling front, I went to Monaco on a sales conference about 17 years ago and we visited the casino (we had a black tie evening, so figured why not go to the casino in Casino Square). It was a much different vibe to Vegas as you can imagine, but I watched folks spunk insane amounts of money. There was a fella playing roulette that I watched for a while, and he was putting down between 25-100 thousand euros every spin. If he won, no emotion. If he lost (far more common), no emotion. I can only surmise he was so wealthy it just didn't register, but I stood there thinking "Fuck me, let me tell you a joke, make you crack a slight smile, for one hand of what you are putting down on the table and I can put down a deposit on a house. I am right here, 5 feet from you, and with one action you could change my life". Didn't though, as I knew what would happen if I tried it.

The sun coming up as I walking into work this morning was spectacular. Looked like the sky was on fire.

Plastic fly swatters. The best legally deployable weapons I've ever used. I have two of them and they sure came in handy today when two wasps invaded my bathroom. I've never wielded anything so effective at dealing with insectoid vermin.
