DOOM: Eternal [PC, PS4, Switch, XBone] - 2019?
DOOM: Eternal [PC, PS4, Switch, XBone] - 2019?
Sequel to quite possibly my favourite shooter of all time, Doom: Eternal had its proper reveal at Quakecon earlier today. Hopefully this'll link to the right point, but if not, skip to the 27 minute mark:
It's not massively different looking to the 2016 game, but they're clearly enhancing some aspects like player mobility, something that was key to how good the game felt when you got into the swing of things. The Doom Slayer now has an air dash move for extra mobility, and the super shotgun now has a grappling hook allowing you to very quickly close in on enemies to turn them into bloody chunks. At the end of the first gameplay demo, they reveal that there's a multiplayer function where you can spawn into another player's campaign as a demon and attempt to kill them.
The second gameplay segment shows more of the worldbuilding they're doing, and honestly I'm not too sure about it. While there *was* worldbuilding in the first game, it was something the player character clearly cared nothing about so it was hidden away in the PDA menu, and he made his frustrations clear. It was refreshing for a protagonist to be there solely to kill things, and really not care about the objectives of other characters. Now it looks like they're doing what they did with Halo 2; expanding massively on the universe they built the foundations of. There are other humans, and spaceships, and there's maybe some sort of war happening. Hopefully this is just window dressing, and you can ignore it if you want.

Not really sold on the air dash and wall climbing being added in. Just interested in shooting demons in new places

You don't have to continually shoot them in the groin you know.

Indeed, now you can shove your wrist blade into their groins too.Medicine Man wrote: βSat Aug 11, 2018 1:18 pmYou don't have to continually shoot them in the groin you know.

Agreed, the air movement looks janky and unnatural.
The constant gun switching gets on my tits too.

But castrating demons was soooo much fun!

Re: DOOM: Eternal
Having watched the videos of Rage 2 and Doom Eternal I find myself more interested in Rage 2. Neither game fills me with much excitement, but I was getting tired of Doom before I had even finished the previous game and Eternal just looks like a lot more of the same with a few new weapons scattered here and there.

I can't say much about the new Doom beyond saying I want it. I want it now.

I reckon I do, too!

Not sure if it came across from that first post, I'm quite excited for it too. I am however trying not to get too excited, partially because buying into hype only ever leads to disappointment, but also because I'm just not sure about some of the elements they showed off. I quite like the idea of an air dash, but it does look janky, I agree. Secondly I don't want to be reliant too much on one weapon for mobility. The super shotgun was probably my least used main weapon in my recent playthrough (after the pistol which I simply didn't use after the first level) - it just never felt like shots were connecting properly, and the combat shotgun offered more versatility.
I do think they'd have to really try to muck the game up, so long as they keep the powerful weapons, excellent player mobility and enemy variety, they'll be fine.

Why has there never been a grapple on a shotgun before? Thatβs bloody genius!

Just got Doom 2016 to play through in the meantime. Missed it before on account of the old machine being a bit dated.

One worry though is since Fallout 76 is being pushed onto the Bethesda client only, I wonder if this and RAGE 2 are going to be on it as well.
