I just discovered an infinite sprint glitch you might find helpful. Squat, open an NPC dialogue, and back out with space, and you will be able to sprint with no stamina leak. It is persistent, too. I managed to open my pack and switch detectors (I use the Hilka whilst running to get the initial alert, as it is a 100m radius, then I use the Bear to pinpoint artefacts), and when I next sprinted, the effect was still there.

I was sent to talk to a guy to find another guy (pretty much the standard mission in the game...). He says he's hunting mutants so as if by magic waves of the fuckers just seem to materialize out of thin air. Giant rats, boar, blind dogs and a huge lumpy stag. I died about 5 times and was not having a fun time. The shotgun has too tight a spread even with buckshot so I kept missing (missing with a fucking shotgun!!).

Anywho, I got my hands on a knackered Saiga not long after so not all bad.

I know exactly the spot all that happened. My playthrough was much easier, but mods so...

Yeah, you are talking about the Trapper and Nimble missions, I jumped on the boxes by the tree trunk, and just shot at it when it was near and let Trapper take the load.

I mentioned previously that I've pretty much being ignoring the plot of the game. This may have been an unwise decision as I've done a few missions with lots of cutscenes and exposition (in the science institute area) and was just left thinking "....What the fuck is going on?". Is it just me or is the central story badly written or explained? The various audio glitches mean I often can't hear said exposition which doesn't help matters.
Also..
Spoiler
I spoke to the Wish Granter and am now for some reason trapped in a room full of dudes with fully automatic weapons who utterly destroy me before I can do anything. It it glitched?

Badly explained story is a Stalker tradition

Basically, something happened in the Zone which caused a special artifact to fly out and destroy our kitchen. We went back to the Zone to find who was responsible, and as far as I can tell the price for getting us in was helping a scientist test out his new device to 'charge' inactive artifacts (it seems that once they leave the Zone they all lose their innate powers), something that if successful has the chance to change the world as all those artifacts can then be utilised globally.

The big scientist faction (the ones who have the Wish Granter) are the ones trying to do this, and it was their experiments that caused the aforementioned kitchen destruction. You can choose to side with them or the anarchist-type faction who want to keep the Zone as it is, basically. There's another faction, from the original game, called Monolith, which are basically people who have had their brains fried by the Wish Granter and worship it as some kind of deity.

There are a couple of other factions who are slightly different flavours of the ones above - Duty who want to guard the Zone and stop it affecting the rest of the world and Freedom, who are basically the stalkers who just want to do their own thing.

The idea is not to kill them all necessarily, but survive...it is a butt-fuck, but run around and up to the door you came in, keep 1m or so from the wall, as their bullets penetrate, kill the one that will spawn right behind you, and med-kill-med from up there. It is a bitch, but ends soon enough.

Ah thanks guys.
When my character started moaning about his house getting wreaked that was honestly the first I'd heard of it. So I entered a radioactive hellhole and murdered at least a couple of hundred people and mutants because my patio doors need replacing and I'll be buggered if I'm paying for it?

Not so much S.T.A.L.K.E.R as K.A.R.E.N

I was sent to a science facility for some reason or another. Entering the facility I had to take out several guards which had them flushing me out of cover with grenades while one worked his way behind me, was very impressed by this. Once inside I popped some unaware guys and made my way into the basement. Did plot stuff there then had a very tense battle going back upstairs using the Spas 12. You weren't allowed to save and it was utterly pitch dark without the torch. All felt very John Wick and was great fun. The game really shines in bits like this.

Are any of the fixer guys able to upgrade the Siaga or does it completely rely on you finding blueprints? No one seems to be able to do anything with it.

Yaniv is worth opening up, that has been the best I have found so far for upgrading. Rostok (Freedom) and Cement Factory (Duty) next best after that.

These download sizes seem unreasonable

I haven't played for a while now, just due to other stuff coming up, will have to try to finish up the story soon!
