Mafia: Definitive Edition [PC, PS4, XBone] - August 28th

Post by Sly Boots » Wed May 13, 2020 5:56 pm

This news is going to excite a fair few people, I'd wager. They're remaking Mafia with shiny new graphics, and it's looking pretty fabulous by all accounts:

They're also going to be remastering Mafia 2 and 3, which may excite fewer people.

However, I would get this day one. I've played the first Mafia, but years after release, and by then it was definitely showing its age and there were a couple of sections that were just infuriating (there was a race, I think, and also a section in a dock with snipers who'd one-shot you from about a million miles away). But if that can be brought up to modern standards it could be fantastic.

It's not official yet, but appeared on the MS store earlier today before being taken down:

A lick of paint wouldn't be enough for me I'm afraid. I liked the original game a lot but it was of its time and the gaming world has moved on. Remake it, sure, build it, but remasters are a cheap cash-in at the best of times.

And yeah, the race many people hated. I believe I ended up rigging my wheel and pedals up for it and ended up enjoying it a fair bit.

Mafia 3 now, just to be contrary, I quite enjoyed. May have to dig that out, dust off my savegames and give that another bash.

I'm with you on Mafia 3, have played the campaign through a couple of times now and still enjoyed it second time around. The story missions are fantastic for the most part, and while the meat of the rest of the game can become a bit repetitive, for me sneaking into an enemy base and stealth-killing my way through it never grew old.

Mafia is one of my all time favourite games but I'd honestly rather see them make a new game set in the 70's or 80's. So much potential there.

3 is hardly due a remaster it's only a few years old.

Goodfellas: The Game, then. Not a criticism, just an observation.

I don't think it is fair to say the world has moved on since Mafia 1, it still has some of the best characters and story of any game so I think with a graphical boost and some tweaks to the combat it will be a joy to play through again. I just hope they don't feel the need to put a load of pointless side content in the world because that is what people expect from these types of games.

Mafia 3 is the epitome of bland open world design. It's fitting that half the game is set in a swamp, as that's where it belongs.

They're also selling them separately from the original game too, which is nice as I own 2 and 3 and have never played Mafia 1. A ground up remake with new content and expanded gameplay sounds like it'll be worth the price of admission to me given how well lauded the original game was.

Mafia 1 is perhaps one of the best games I have played. It deserves its acclaim

Mafia remaster is going to cost £35 which might be OK. I am a bit concerned at the talk of new gameplay elements, the game does not need to have the world filled out with side content.

Wow the Mafia 2 remaster is rough, in some instances it looks straight up worse. They have changed NPC faces completely and they look terrible by comparison and in some areas they have depopulated the world in order to reduce the amount of work need to remaster it.

Oh, wait, didn't read the article and assumed you'd get the Mafia 1 remake if you owned 2 or 3. I'll still get it, but that's less amazeballs.
