New cRPG The Waylanders - entering Early Access June 16

Post by Sly Boots » Thu Jun 11, 2020 9:35 am

This could be quite intriguing, a new party-based RPG being worked on by people who helped create (being slightly vague as I don't know exactly what their roles were) Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Pillars of Eternity, is entering Steam Early Access next week:
The Waylanders is an intriguing party-based RPG from some of the people who helped make Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Pillars of Eternity. Obviously that means expectations are pretty high, but a new trailer showcased at IGN's Summer of Gaming event gives us a neat glimpse at the world and some of the combat, and it looks pretty great so far.

We won't have to wait long to know for sure, because The Waylanders is coming to Steam Early Access on June 16. Yes, I'm a bit disappointed that we'll have to wait to play the game in a complete state, but the success of other early access RPGs like Divinity: Original Sin 2 gives me hope. The Early Access version will only include the first of three acts initially but more will come over time, and developer Gato Studio predicts the full version should arrive in late 2020 or early 2021.

Official trailer:

Could be one to keep an eye on.

Is the main character in the trailer voiced by Finchy from the UK Office?

Yeah, I’ll be straight in on this. Normally with a story-based RPG I’d wait for the finished game rather than early access, but I’ve been desperate for a new RPG to get stuck into.

He does a lot of VO for games, did quite a few characters in Greedfall.

Yikes, went to check Steam as I just remembered this entered EA a couple of days ago, and sounds like it's launched as a bit of a mess, and extremely short currently for the £27 they're asking.

Currently sitting as a Mixed rating (61% positive).

PCG's take on it - too soon even for EA is their verdict, but definite promise for the future:

Just 1 mission to do in it for £27.99 is taking the piss really. I'd expect to be able to do several or at least a small chunk of the game. This really has been released way way to early.
Mr Annoyed and Proud of it.
