I also don't mind progression, gives you something to work towards. I find if you get everything immediately you tend to experiment less with weapons and load outs and the game very quickly becomes stale.
Doom never became stale! :p

Oh deary me, a studio "shake up" just weeks after the game launches. Apparently the player base has already dropped by 50% and it had one of the highest dropped pre-order and refund requests in the series. Despite what the above article says about growing the franchise I think old Dice might soon be going the way of many EA bought studios and getting the chop in the next couple of years.

Plus they're selling a Santa themed skin...

I was going to ask about this game - are any of you still playing it? I held off and will probably end up being given it for Christmas, so hopefully it will be relatively bug-free by then.

I don't like how they keep talking about making stuff that will add to the 'narrative'. It's a BF game, who gives a shit about story? I wish they hadn't bothered adding singleplayer campaigns for the last few games and instead spent more time making maps for the MP. I know there isn't one for this game, but they clearly didn't spend enough time on it either.

I think they have backtracked on the Santa thing now, or at least claimed that it was going to be something seasonal that you could use in Portal mode. I would be fine with that I think, it's nice to have the option for silly stuff in the more 'custom' game mode.

I didn't get it in the end and only played the 10 hour preview for about 5 hours before uninstalling. It's just a half baked game that's chock full of terrible decisions, I hated what I played of the base game. I mostly played Portal which was fun but still had glaring issues (emptying a mag at near point blank range into an enemy and not hitting them for instance). There also seems to be a drop off of YouTubers covering the game, including some who only made Battlefield videos.

I really wanted this game to succeed but I think it might be time to hang up my old and battered BF coat and move on to something else.

Damn, that sucks. I am still playing a lot of BFV at the moment, maybe I'll end up sticking with that.

I think if BFV didn't have the silly cosmetics and allowed you to make larger squads (and had a few more maps on a different front, maybe) I think it would probably be up there with BF2, which is my favourite BF game. Maybe add the commander back in too, although the squad leader abilities negate some of the point of that.

I'm still playing BFV as well and still enjoying it. It bugs me a little that there's vehicles and weapons in Portal 1942 that were obviously developed for BFV but never used.

I don't play them so am not really qualified to comment, but I wonder if they aren't firing them out too often. Given the amount people have to invest in getting gear, levels etc, I wonder if there is not a degree of burnout from constantly resetting progress for the next in the series? Of course that is without the game being a bit shit which seems the case with this one.

BFV came out in 2018, so 3 years ago. That's normal for the series really. They don't have a good excuse considering how many people worked on it.

Yeah, I think covid hasn't helped with the timeline! There is usually just a couple of years between the BF games, although it does vary. Here are the main ones that released on PC:

BF1942: 2002
BF: Vietnam: 2004
BF2: 2005
BF2142: 2006
BF: BC2: 2010
BF3: 2011
BF4: 2013
BFH: 2015
BF1: 2016
BFV: 2018
BF2042: 2021

Already on sale and the Steam player count is down by 70%, it's only been out a month. It's not that I want this game to fail but it's somewhat satisfying to see it. Plus they added a Christmas themed game to Portal that's gone down like a lead balloon.

So I got this for Christmas and... I am actually quite enjoying it in general. I've played about 36 hours now, and I'm still having fun. I'd say that's more 'stupid fun' rather than refined fun that earlier entries have been. There are a lot of problems though - stuff like not being able to change squad properly in a match, no persistent servers that cycle through maps, no VOIP, stupid specialists instead of classes, etc. This was all in BFV so there's no excuse for it to not be in this game. There are also still some annoying bugs/weirdness that need to be sorted out - stuff like some revives still not working if people are on top of/partially inside objects. But somehow despite these things I am enjoying it. I'd give it a solid 7/10, maybe higher if they actually add these missing features back in.

I think there are some other larger problems that the game has that will affect my long term enjoyment though, so maybe in another 30 hours I'll be bored of it. The maps aren't particularly great, and it's very chaotic in 128 player mode - there is no front line, which has been a problem in previous BFs but is more of one here due to the very open map design and the high degree of mobility that some of the specialists have (as well as stuff like choppers). Sundance and McKay in particular can very easily get behind lines quite quickly with the wingsuit and grappling hook. Defending points often means that you have to be watching all sides as it's so easy to flank around.

I do enjoy grappling everywhere though

Edit: I have also enjoyed what I've played of the Portal mode. However, there aren't many good servers (aside from the 'official' playlists on the main screen) that are in the browser. A lot of them are just stupid bot farming XP servers rather than anything interesting. I did like playing gun game and the two old BC2 maps though. It's nice playing them again with better mobility (I can actually lie down and move around more smoothly now!)

No shame in enjoying it, well not much anyway... If it ends up on Game Pass I'll give it a go but I won't be buying it. Saying that though, if they return the class based system and maybe reduce the match sizes to 64 players I'd consider it.

There is a 64 player mode for conquest and rush, although it is annoyingly a 'timed' thing so it is only temporary. I really don't see them getting rid of specialists and bringing back classes for this game. Although you can do that in portal to some extent as it's just the old classes from each game.
