Beta starts today. Will see if I can get a chance to play it later and give my thoughts on it. Very excited :P

Downloaded beta and wondered why it was only 9Gb. Had a quick game and it was ok but looked very mediocre. After much arsing about I found the Series X version which is 17Gb and am downloading now. Won't be able to play again until tonight though.

PC version looks good

So I played a few matches of the beta and I'm already bored with it I'm afraid to say. It needs a lot more work before it should be released if this is an example of how the final game turns out. I know it's an older build of the game but I doubt it's that old either.

Several graphical and technical issues like the screen turning black briefly and clipping into the ground, the usual beta stuff. The visuals are nice but also manage to be very bland at the same time. Your only able to play as specialist characters so you have players on both teams who look identical. A massive map with huge areas of nothing worth doing anything in. Guns feel rather weak so everyone just runs the assault rifle. The capture areas where all the combat takes place are utterly nondescript and void of character. It's just all so very dull :|

I'm not the only one moaning either, there seems to be a general feeling of disappointment over the beta. Probably needs to be delayed again until next year at least.

Pity to see excitement turn to disillusionment so quickly!

In fairness I've hated pretty much every Battlefield game on launch then end up pumping thousands of hours into them. They start shite and evolve into great games. Have to keep saying it's only the beta but they could have picked a better map.

Gotta say, this is exactly what I expected. Everything that they showed before the beta looked so undercooked and unfinished.

I also don't like how they've removed some stuff that they added in BFV too, like fortifications and some of the movement options (e.g. crouch running, lying on your back, etc)

Tbh I think BFV is actually one of the better BF games from the last 10 years, and I say this as someone who has played since BF1942. I really think people didn't give it enough of a chance because of DICE fucking around with it so much during its lifetime (plus the bad marketing). I've played more of it than any other BF game, with the exception of BF2.

Are you talking about Battlefield: Vietnam, that came out in 2004? That was an absolute blast, I loved it at the time. I was in a clan and we would stampede the VC unless another clan happened to be on comms on the opposing side. Loved having the era-appropriate music playing, that added a level of detail that I didn't realize a game needed so badly. I became an expert at taking out vehicles with the LAW rockets, haha :) good times

"from the last 10 years"

Of course not, I mean Battlefield V (as in 5), the WW2 one that came out a couple of years back! I did love Vietnam, although ultimately it was far surpassed when BF2 came out.

I was what I thought was a safe distance from the space rocket when it exploded, got yeeted across the map by the blast wave which was highly entertaining

Oh, the 'V' threw me off :) gotcha. I kinda figured you knew Vietnam was older than a decade. I just wanted to throw in a mention for it, but you're right BF2 was a giant leap.

For me 1942 was the pinnacle, soooo many hours sunk on that game.

I dunno if you've gone back to it, but for me it doesn't really hold up as well almost 20 years later. I think that the pinnacle of that era was BF2 - it added all of the features that enhanced teamplay even further, the maps and vehicles were more interesting, etc. Stuff like having a squad seems so vital to BF now that it's weird to go back to BF1942 and not have it. I also think the infantry gameplay in 1942 was faaar worse than it should have been, especially when you compare the feel of shooting guns etc. to other games from around that time (MoH:AA, CoD and so on).

That said, it's excruciating to go back to BF2 and have to listen to the audio of the commander/teammates constantly spotting things. I still can't believe that they never let you turn that down.

ENEMY BOAT SPOTTED. ENEMY BOAT SPOTTED. ENEMY INFANTRY SPOTTED.

I think my personal zenith was Battlefield 3.

Still, been playing some Battlefield 1 online a little last few days and for a five year old game actually holds up fairly well. It's got it flaws and annoying elements but on the whole.. Not bad.

2 and 4 are personal highlights for me, I loved the changing maps and destructible environments in 4 and wish they'd pushed it harder.

BF1 was a great game too, it felt a lot more atmospheric. The mode with the advancing battlefront which moved the map to later stages as the offensive team captured points to move forwards had a really epic vibe about it.

The close combat addon for 3 was probably my fav. 3 overall really. Hardcore with minimap is my jam and it was the last one to have it enabled.

Hardline was a bloody good time too, I'd put it above 4. Sucks that everyone went so hard against it, it had some of the most fun BF modes. Couldn't get into 1 or V at all.
