Midnight Suns - Marvel meets XCOM, out March 2022

Post by Sly Boots » Wed Aug 25, 2021 9:15 pm

The most exciting upcoming Marvel game is now Midnight Suns, a tactical RPG from the Firaxis team behind alien invasion strategy games XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2. It was just announced at Gamescom, and it's out surprisingly soon, in March 2022. And if you're expecting "XCOM but with Marvel heroes," designer Jake Solomon says you're going to be surprised.

Midnight Suns isn't a Marvel-skinned XCOM, but it is structured like an XCOM game. There's a base that can be upgraded, called The Abbey, from which you'll select missions out in the world. Before embarking on one of the turn-based combat missions, you'll choose three heroes from a cast of 12 Marvel troublemakers to come along. So far, ten of those heroes have been announced: Dr. Strange, Magik, Iron Man, Wolverine, Ghost Rider (the Robbie Reyes version), Blade, Captain America, Nico Minoru, and Captain Marvel.

I'll probably be more interested when they show off actual gameplay.

I think it's hard to tell, there'll apparently be a full mission shown in a week's time.

I'm keeping faith, the team behind it developed one of my favourite games of all time in the same genre, so I'm hopeful.

It just doesn't quite work for me, thematically. Iron Man flies around like a fighter jet, constraining him and some of the other Marvel characters to XCom-style turn based fighting doesn't do it for me. I also really don't like randomly-assigned abilities when a character has a known ability set.

I wasn't overly convinced with the formula either, the trailer confirms my doubts.

Combat doesn't look too bad but I have concerns about what seems like the inability to avoid damage.

I guess I'd have to see more to properly judge it, but it looks... fine, I guess? I agree DJ, nothing in that video makes positioning seem all that important, whereas in XCom it was a key part of the experience because your troops get murdered if caught out in the open. There are environment objects that seem to be pushed or thrown at characters to cause damage, but there wasn't a single bit of actual cover shown. I'm also a bit wary that they seem to suggest you can continue moving until you perform an action - do they mean you can re-do your movement up until the point you attack, or can characters simply run around to their hearts' content?

Nothing in that looks very tactical, and supposedly that's ten hours into it?

Watched that earlier, it's grabbed me a little more.

And yes, developers really shouldn't let Ian Higton record footage when there's a character creator.
