That was probably more interesting than playing the game.

I think my main worry about this is that the vast majority of humour on display just hasn't hit the mark with me. It feels like it's trying just a bit too hard to be "zany".

Bulletstorm set that bar very high :)

I still can't think of Waggleton P Tallylicker without a smile.

The greatest line spoken in any game ever.

This does look interesting - I recently played BL2 a bit and was bored stiff - this does look like it has more fun gunplay wise which is an area where I think BL really fails in hindsight.

Sitting on a mixed rating (61% positive) on Steam as well after 750 reviews.

Sounds like what PCG said about great gunplay, uninspiring game world isn't far off the mark judging by the user reviews I've seen.

Played for a couple of hours - the above sounds about right. One of the most dull openning scene-setting-levels I've played - but its short :-) Open world and level designs and controls first class. Very polished game (must have been finished for a while...) Difficulty settings apear broken (well, hard play is way too easy); enemy AI non existant. But I guess its not really a hard-core shooter. 101 things to do may please completists but I'm working my way through the main missions...nothing particularly interesting to note... Makes me want to load Rage1 again - I'm sure it had more to it...

Fuck, I remember Rage 1 being pretty bare bones on stuff to do.

The Eurogamer video team did a 90 minute livestream of this yesterday, starting from the very beginning, and it looked pretty tedious to me. None of that humour the trailer was suggesting would be a significant part of the experience was on display. They *were* playing with a gamepad, which tends to have the effect of making the gameplay look a little static, but frankly the game looked like a 2000s throwback with constant gameplay-interrupting tutorial messages, forced tutorial sections and "told not shown" expositional worldbuilding. I suspect I'd have been bored within my first session had I bought it.

Put an hour or so into the game and I can see where some of the complaints are coming from in terms of mission design and things to do. There is a lot of stuff to do but it is all a variation on 'go here kill this or get this' but I don't mind that so far as the gunplay is a lot of fun. It is very kinetic with the guns packing a meaty punch and enemies reacting to gunfire and exploding on death or via a melee kill. I've just picked up the shotgun and true to form it's really good with the Overdrive mode being a lot of fun. I think as I unlock more weapons and abilities the combat will improve but even on a base level it is a lot of fun so far.

Humour wise there is some there but like most videogame humour it is rather hit and miss.

Finished this up over the weekend, around 13 hours put in in total and I think that feels about right, any more and I think I would have started to get a bit bored. The combat is really good and some of the guns, especially the shotgun, are a lot of fun but you are basically just clearing out camps of enemies and then driving to the next camp. There is a lot to do in this game but it's all too similar in nature. Additionally because it's all the same the driving around can get a bit tiresome, objectives are fairly spread out and there are only a few fast travel points on the map so coupled with the repetitive nature of the side missions you spend a lot of time driving around and not doing much else. There is barely any car combat with enemies, when they turn up, taking a pot shot at you and continuing on their way.

Overall it feels like a game that was designed in a vacuum by people who hadn't played an openworld game since the early 2000s, if it wasn't for the combat it would have been completely forgettable but the combat is so much fun that it managed to see me through.
