Phantom Doctrine [PC, PS4, XBone]

Have been nattering a little bit with Dj about this but thought I'd open up a thread as well seeing as it's out today.

It's a Cold War-era XCOM-alike, turn-based tactical maps while carrying out espionage, uncovering conspiracies and so on, by the makers of Hard West.

RPS preview from a while back:

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/1 ... preview-2/

Hopefully see some reviews this afternoon by the sound of it.

Already available to pre-order from GOG - where you can get 15% off the £30 asking price using the code: OddDoctrine

Am personally holding off to see what reviews say and may wait until it hits £20 somewhere, but the premise sounds great and hopefully the execution will match.

Very interested in this. The theme really appeals, as does the gameplay. I was a tad disappointed with Hard West. The turn based system it used never felt quite right and had very odd rules. The narrative structure was good. I may wait for some reviews as well, but if it's looking positive I will go for it. After watching a load of The Americans, some Cold War spy action is appealing.

It sounds intriguing. I'll keep half an eye on this, I like to dip in every now and then and try a new game - this sounds like it would be my cup of tea.

Fuck yeah! You're the only other person I have seen that watches this. Always knew you were a good guy. :D

Ah man I love it. Discovered it whilst struck down with shingles last year!

Shingles?! Jesus. I never knew you lived in the forties. ;)

In all seriousness though I trust you're well on the mend now I hope?

Well that's a shame. Sounds like they've gone for very similar rules to Hard West, only renaming the "Luck" thing to "Awareness". Eugh.

Excellent series, felt sad watching the last episode ever after seeing all the characters evolve.

Sounding like a bit of a swing and a miss, shame.

I wouldn't put much stock in that RPS review personally.

I've only played the first few missions so far, but I'm really liking it. There are a lot of systems in the game so it will take a while to get my head around. I think it really nails the feeling of playing a spy game.

How are you finding the combat Dj? Reading the Steam user reviews that seems to be a lot of people's major problem with it - shots always hit, enemies can shoot through walls and floors from any distance that sort of thing.

Sitting at 58% (Mixed) on Steam currently.

Edit: There's a response on the Steam forum from a dev to say they're addressing the LoS issue, could be that sorts a major problem with the game.
