Anthem [PC, PS4, XBone] - February 22nd 2019
Re: Anthem [PC, PS4, XBone] - February 22nd 2019
Just seen that from Bellular
Bit of a daft move to call the next content Cataclysm and to open with the Early access line on reddit. Not the thing you want to hear after selling out $60/Β£50 for a game

So apparently the much-vaunted 90-day roadmap has been delayed, ostensibly to focus on bug fixes, but given how the player base is bleeding out (it seems a survey of 1,000 players was carried out, and over half said they'd quit playing for good), it begs the question of whether this live service is already near the point of being abandoned. I don't see any way they'll devote those kind of resources to updating a game and adding content that isn't being played.
In a way I hope this fails and fails big, to discourage publishers from this live service model and get back to releasing games that are content-complete at launch (not saying DLC can't be used to extend gameplay and campaigns down the line) and don't require all our time, money and attention.

Whenever someone comments like that, I always assume that the publisher will instead follow the worst possible logic.
Our big budget live service game failed? Oh, there must not be a market for big budget games anymore. Let's focus on mobile! Fire all of our PC developers!

Sadly, probably all too true.

Jim Sterling made a point that I think is probably all too true; players see development roadmaps as promised content, but publishers see it as free content. If a game is not making them money, then it doesn't really make sense for a publisher to continue pouring money into it. They're under no obligation to continue supporting it, and they already have the customers' money. They may as well move staff on to other projects and keep a skeleton staff working on the game to keep up the appearance of support. I suspect Anthem's problems will get sorted, but it'll be far later than it should have been.

Hopefully DA4 is early enough in development for them to drop any live service gumph they'd been tempted to crowbar in, in the hope of building on any success from Anthem, as a result of that game's failure.

Re: Anthem [PC, PS4, XBone] - February 22nd 2019
Honestly doubt they will drop the Games for Service (GAS for short) from DA4. This is EA and they will keep on going with it. Anthem netted them a nice tidy sum from people buying it I recon and they don't really care if people drop it now. As Raid said they can just stick on a handfull of people and the servers up for a bit longer saving them money in creating anything new and eventually shut the servers down.
Which might not be that long away since the community is appearing that low in numbers, there having issues in getting full groups to play for the end game content.
There was a reddit post asking the users how many had left and other grievances with the game. It had shown more than 50% had left the game not to return. I had thought maybe that's reddit users and not the community at large but it seems more plausible from what I said above.

I don't know where you get the idea that Dragon Age 4 will be going down the GaS route. Sure it will have a roadmap of content post launch as all games do now but there has been no suggestion that it will be an online game in the Destiny, Anthem mould.

The original version that was being made sounded a lot better in concept.

Anthem lead producer leaves Bioware after eight years:

"But Anthem is totally fine, you guys, it's nothing to do with that, in fact it's probably because it's too awesome that I'm leaving."
