It may not be a legal breach but it's certainly acting in bad faith.

I won't say it's actively misleading, as I've no doubt it's not something they were planning to do until very recently, but I can see why people are upset. They paid for a thing, and now they're not getting what they paid for.

At least they're honouring refunds... but would they have got the money to make the game they did through crowd-funding if it had been clear from the outset it would be an EGS exclusive? I'm not sure they would.

The comment could have been written before the developers said they would also be giving people a GOG or Steam key a year after the Epic deal expires. When this first came out there was no such promise from developers and people would just have to stick with an Epic key.

I agree it's not great as Fig and Kickstarter are different to just pre-ordering a game, you are giving your money to the developer based on specific promises made by them. It gets even more murky when you consider that they got people to invest via Fig under the assumption that the game would be widely available and thus maximise sales.

If this sort of thing is going to continue then I think it would behove Steam to change their license and say if a developer puts their game on Steam either for pre-order or just in the database so it can appear in searches, then it needs to come out on Steam.

The Discord is ablaze in furry over it now. Can't say I blame people being vitrol about it there and I honestly have no idea why they thought offering steam keys or gog ones after a year would be palatable to the backers.

They've let on that the money Epic gave them is enough to work on the game for a year even if they had to refund ever single backer and you could bet that includes not a single store sell on Epic too. As that will be included in the deal to match what ever they thought it could have sold for on steam/gog.

Soured my anticipation in what was one of the games I was really looking forward to.

Delayed until December...

https://forums.snapshotgames.com/t/back ... pdate/3843
Hi, fans and backers,

As you know, our small team has – from day one – tried our best to exceed your expectations with Phoenix Point. Our number-one goal throughout development has been to make a game that we will enjoy and remember for a long time to come.

While the development team is working hard, and Phoenix Point is shaping up really well, we now know we’re going to need more time to get it to meet our very high standards. As you probably know, Snapshot has a commitment to keep crunch to a minimum – and that is a commitment we take very seriously. Therefore, because we know we have more work than we have time, we will be delaying the release of game from September 3, 2019 to December, 2019.

We know this is not our first delay, and we are very sorry to the fans who we know are highly anticipating getting their hands on Phoenix Point. No one is more disappointed than we are, but we collectively agree that we would rather miss a launch date than ship something that does not meet our exacting standards. We want the Phoenix Point you play to be one of your favorite games of all time, and that means we need a bit more time.

Blimey, this is out next week :o

It won't exist for me effectively for another year due to EGS exclusivity, but is anyone planning to get it?

Looks like it's coming out on Xbox, so I'll get it for that rather than submit to the EGS. I would have been sceptical a year or two ago whether a game like this could work well with a controller, but then I played an entire campaign of XCOM 2 on Xbox and it was great.

It's on PC Game Pass apparently so I guess I'll be able to play it.

PCG - 77%

Sounds interesting but flawed. Certainly will be happy to wait for a Steam release and probably a price drop too.

Appears there are some pretty big bugs right now, the AI seems kind of broken and the free aim doesn't work properly. Just seen someone line up a shot on an alien which filled the reticule only for it to miss and hit the wall in front of the target. Game is clearly unfinished and has been pushed out the door which isn't a total surprise considering the reasoning around why they took Epic's money. I'd say it's one to avoid until they patch it up, or release it on Steam.

BTW, for those interested, it looks like the Youtuber whose XCOM2 campaigns I follow has started one for Phoenix Point:

From what I've seen and heard about this game today my advice is not to buy it. The combat and AI seem totally broken.

Kinda glad that I got my refund now. Still really wanted the game for being a fan of his previous games. By the time it gets to steam should be fixed, maybe and be bought on a sale if it's improved enough.

I tend to only watch playthrough of games I have a side/low interest in. It's a pain to have it all spoiled in something you wanted to do yourself. Dodging Witcher 3 stuff for a long time before I played it oohhh boy.

For me that's true of story-led games (like W3), but I like watching the more tactical stuff, particularly as you can pick up how to play the game and useful strategy tips.

That is true I guess.
