Call of Duty: Modern Warfare [PC, PS4, Xbone] - October 26th

Post by Medicine Man » Thu May 30, 2019 7:05 pm

“This is an all-new Modern Warfare reimagined in every way,” said Dave Stohl, co-studio head at Infinity Ward. “We are creating an emotionally charged experience that’s inspired by the headlines in the world today, where the rules are grey and battle lines are blurred.

“Players will join a varied cast of international special forces and freedom fighters in gripping and heart-pounding missions through iconic European cities and volatile expanses of the Middle East. It’s intense, it’s exciting, and we can’t wait for our fans to play this October.”

A lot of what I've read about this sounds bad.

How can it be "all-new" and "reimagined" at the same time? Given that it's clearly selling itself on old content, the former is a blatant lie.

Urgh, I know I'm a cynical bastard at the best of times, but this just looks like an incredibly obvious cash grab. Stick on the name of the popular one, from when the series was selling. I take it that's meant to be Captain Price? Yes, popular character Captain Price is back because he has bankable facial hair and he was in that one that everyone liked, so if they put him in the series again it'll sell lots. I'm genuinely surprised there wasn't a shot of popular level All Ghillied Up (the one set in Pripyat) in it.

Fuck it, this is going to be another huge waste of development talent, isn't it?

I think the CoD franchise finally has its back against the wall and has to release something that people might still want to play after a couple of weeks.

They really pissed the Black Ops magic away by setting it in the future when they could have spanned the 1960's to the beginning of Modern Warfare 1.

Not what I've heard, apparently the story is just straight up awful in so many ways, this being a prime example.

I got a PS4 this weekend which was bundled with COD, so I played through the campaign (my first COD since Modern Warfare 3, I believe). Took about 6 hours. Some thoughts:

- It looks insanely pretty. The missions with night vision goggles have moments that feel photorealistic.

- The gameplay/shooting is exactly the same as its been for the last decade (and arguably longer).

- The story is your generic COD, pseudo-Tom Clancy guff.

- It has needlessly provocative scenes which don't give you perspective on the horrible, controversial sides of war so much as they make you harrumph with the tedium. There's also a London terrorist attack where you actually get to play the damn game in the midst of some Daily Mail-baiting controversy.

It's more COD. That's all anyone needs to know.

I've heard that it's technically very accomplished and well put together, but gritty to the point of tedium.

It’s prettier more of the same. Some parts look fantastic but some look pretty last gem. Same constantly shot in the back by spawning enemy multiplayer. If you want more of the same this is for you.

Oh and infinity ward have no idea how to write kids dialogue

Benefit of the doubt on the Highway thing - is it the same highway, and could they be referring to a later, even worse incident on the same stretch?

It doesn't make it okay, but detail matters in how fucked-up it is.

No there is no benefit of the doubt, they are directly referencing the Highway of Death which is a place in Iraq. Has Russia carried out similar types of atrocities in other parts of the world, probably, but this is an American one dressed up to look like it was Russian. It's also terrible just directly referencing a war crime in of itself.

So in order to now see your kill/death ratio in game you have to buy a 20 quid dlc pack. You almost have to give them credit for finding unique ways to gouge players.
