Control

Post by Snowy » Wed Jul 10, 2019 9:30 am

Happened across this today and watched the 13 minute gameplay doodad.

Not completely sold, unlike the writer (and haven't watched Fleabag but from the descriptions don't think it's for me), but it looks different.

Remedy always make interesting games but they are not always perfect.

The style of writing in the RPS review annoyed me.

It's full of stuff like this: "Control is a very serviceable shooter. It feels good in the fingerbits, you know? And there are a lot of wobbly visual effects that make your powers feel like smooth Hollywood super-nonsense."

And: "The game makes efforts to mix up this formula by adding more baddies – shieldy shootmen, flying flingers, explodey wobblecorpses"

Just quite annoying to wade through.

Habit and boredom mostly, I guess.

I was going to put a post up the other week asking if people have good game sites they regularly use, as tbh RPS and PCG just don't cut it for me anymore.

try these guys

https://www.gameinformer.com/reviews

I just read PC Gamer reviews but only just as I tend to ignore most reviews now and base my purchase on watching 5 min of gameplay on YouTube. If it looks like a game I will enjoy to play - add to Steam wishlist and buy it in 2 years time for under a fiver. Job done.

RPS is the internet equivalent of Edge. Obnoxious site. I only use it to read news headlines.

In fairness to RPS I like the fact they give good coverage of indie games, which is increasingly where my gaming focus lies, and they have some entertaining features, like the Dwarf Fortress playthrough they've been doing for a while now.

But now that the original writers have all left I'm find myself increasingly aggravated by their tone and style. Maybe it's a generational thing and I'm just being 'old man shouts at cloud' about it.

The fact I can't access it now from my desktop PC because it insists I turn off my adblocker but fails to recognise I've done so is the real deal-breaker, though, so I'm restricted to squinting at the odd article on my phone.

But I will check out that site.

Comparing RPS to Edge is elevating RPS to a position it doesn't deserve. The whole Edge being obnoxious thing really feels like a hold-over from the late 90s early 2000s when they were a bit like that. Now they are one of the few places around that does good long form games writing.

lock: sites that prevent you from reading due to add-blockers
key: Brave. Its excellent and i like the interface. I replaced that over Vivaldi which recently replaced Opera. I use Brave as my secondary browser after Chrome. You get access to all locked websites with zero adverts. ;)
