Greedfall - Spiders' new open-world RPG - out Sept 10

Post by Sly Boots » Fri Aug 30, 2019 7:47 am

I'd not heard of this one before now, but it looks pretty intriguing so thought I'd make a thread for it.

You've probably heard of Spiders and played at least one of their games, I'd put them alongside someone like Piranha Bytes in terms of devs that make interesting but pretty janky games. I'd only played one of their previous titles, Of Orcs and Men, but that wasn't too bad.

This seems to be their most ambitious title yet, and the obvious touchstones here are Witcher 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisition, in that it's an open-world RPG with investigation elements, party combat in real-time, but with a pause menu that allows you to select different spells etc.

The graphics look decent, although during speech the character models look a bit wooden to me, on the plus side the voice acting I've seen seems very good.

Gameplay video:

On Reddit someone is claiming to have gotten hands on an early copy (for PS4), and his impressions are very positive and he answers quite a few questions from others (no spoilers that I've seen):

It seems like they've really pushed the boat out for this one, and could be worth checking out.

I also only just discovered it, and it sounds like it's in my wheelhouse. Will definitely be checking it out.

I'm still a bit wary as it is Spiders and their games always look good in pre-release footage.

Out today, and now that the review embargo is over they are starting to appear.

Early signs seem to be that... it's good:

Sitting at 77% on metacritic so far, no negative reviews yet.

'Recommended' rating from Eurogamer:

All of which is to tell you that GreedFall is very much a typical open-world RPG. If you have ever played one, you'll be familiar with all of this. Yet GreedFall, for its faults, improves upon most of the big-name games it wants to be compared to in a couple of choice ways. The quests are one. No task is ever complete in one journey, and fetch quests, while present, are always part of a bigger whole. While it can be exhausting to travel around to solve something as scintillating as a property dispute, no quest is quite like another - and that's an astounding feat.
Sounds like it takes some cues from Witcher 3 beyond just combat and exploration, has also learned from its approach to quests, and that can only be a good thing.

Really want to play this but I'll be finishing FF8 on Switch first.

It does sound good but I've so many games on my plate at the moment that it will take me a while to get to this.

More than anything, I think it's the price that will keep me from this for a while. Cheapest I can see it is £34 which I just can't stretch to, but when it comes down another tenner I'll take the plunge.

This just hit Game Pass for PC, which is quite nice as I've been keeping tabs on it for a while but it has yet to drop to a price I'm happy paying for a slightly janky game.

Could be worth a look for anyone wanting to wait until CP2077 gets a few more patches.

Oh nice, cheers Sly. Not any problems with Cyberpunk but I do love a janky open world RPG :)

Having played through this earlier in the year I think it is a decent RPG but it has it's faults and areas where I wish the developers had fleshed things out a bit more. I had quite a bit of fun with it though and liked the story, definitely work a look.
