Cube World - Out September 30th

Post by Sly Boots » Sat Sep 07, 2019 8:16 am

Wow... I never thought this one would see the light of day.

Some of you may remember this Minecraft-looking open-world RPG entering paid alpha back in 2013 and looking pretty promising, only to fall off the face of the earth. The one-man development team has posted (very) occasional new screenshots on his Twitter, but for the most part it had gone dark.

https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/cube-world-e ... -on-steam/

Today, it's been announced that the 1.0 version will be launching sometime in September/October on Steam, with a store page and everything:

Everyone who bought the alpha will get a Steam key. I actually just found my old sign-in details from 2013 and it all seems to work (I can even re-download the alpha), so shall look forward to that! :D

Holy cow. Me and my son still occasionally pick this up and play it whilst lamenting it never got finished.

But now... fingers crossed.

I remember buying the alpha thinking 'this will be a nice game to play with my little girl'... she turns 9 this year

The dev has opened up on why development has taken so long, includes some mental health issues, poor guy:

Existing alpha version owners (you can't buy it anymore unfortunately) will get a Steam beta key next week:

I think that's for a week of closed beta prior to the full launch. I got my code over the weekend anyway (where it said it was for the beta).

Yikes... reading the beta player comments on the Steam forum, and sounds like a bit of a dumpster fire honestly. What happened? :(

I can't even get it to launch :(

The world moved on and lots of better games with the same premise have been made?

It's not even that, people who played a load of the alpha say lots of changes have been made since then that make it worse.

- they removed XP and levelling
- progress is instead linked to equipment
- you lose all your equipment (including any gliders, boats etc) whenever you move to a new region... this is a pretty big problem for a procedurally generated game that is basically all about exploring new regions
- people are reporting being unable to make any progress because all enemies, even basic stuff like chickens, are unkillable and 1-shot you in return.
- and I still can't launch the game

On the launching issue, it looks like there's a problem with Windows 7 and people on the forum are saying instead of actually fixing the issue the dev 5 days ago changed the minimum spec to Win 8 instead.

FFS -_-

I see, considering the protracted development of the game I'm not surprised it's a bit of a mess. Games that take an ages to come out are almost always a mess.

I guess on the positive side I'll never get to see how bad the finished product became :/

I never expected this to see the light of day so I'm not even disappointed over the fee I paid to get the alpha 6 years ago, mainly that it was a fun little game at that time.

Oh well.
