Half-Life: Alyx (Had to be VR)

I think this deserves it's own thread.
Eurogamer make a good case for why VR makes sense for the next Half-Life game.

The thing is the name makes it sound more like an experience than a full game.

Oh right Valve think they can force arm people to use their VR solution because its Half Life - as they did with Steam, but unlike Steam, which was free to download and install, a VR set will set you back several hundred pounds

Does Valve think everyone is going to rush out and get a VR headset for this?

I've already got a VR headset and I'm not particularly bothered for a Half-Life VR game. They've missed the boat.

Likewise. Half Life hasn't been relevant for over a decade (Episode 2 came out in 2007), and Alyx was never all that interesting a character to begin with, so I can't say I'm too interested.

I am not that fussed at the news and I own a Rift...

Curious to see it but thinking it might be some sort of mini games and a disaster in waiting, like Artifact.
Just finish HL2 Episode 3 and end the saga. Don't need spin offs in the universe anymore.

Apparently it is a full game.
Alyx was never all that interesting a character to begin with, so I can't say I'm too interested.
I think at the time she was great and they fleshed her out a bit more in the episodes, fps games didn't really have characters that would interact with you in the same way. I do think they would need to do more with her now but I'm sure they will.
I think a fair bit of revisionist history goes on with Half-Life 2 where people forget about the things it bought to the genre/games as they are so ubiquitous now. I see people also denigrate the physics stuff a fair bit.

Likewise, I think some people forget how much criticism HL2 got on gaming forums back in 2004 when it was released. I still remember that thread on PCGF quite clearly; a lot of us were basically saying the gunplay was a letdown and the enemy AI was a major step backwards from the marines you faced in HL1, etc.
I clearly recall it getting a mixed response (from gamers) back then, so I wouldn't personally say there's any revisionism going on.

Personally I'm going to reserve judgement until I see it. However the VR thing erks me, just hope it can be played without it.
