Re: I Just Watched (Films)
yep. Even the book became a drag towards the end. I think this whole retro thing is getting tiresome. Yes the 80s was great - I lived through them, but why would anyone under 20 give a shit ?

Zombieland: Double Tap
Yeah that was adequate I suppose, would have been funnier 10 years ago. Pretty much exact same story as first film. Silly gore, novelty zombie kills and some funny bits.

Miss Violence
The first scene is really well filmed, especially the slow pan down. The rest of it is a tough watch and I dont think it earns it or has a good conclusion to justify it. I feel like it was made with tough subject matter = praise and very little else. Wouldn't recommend.

Color Out of Space
Latest Nicolas Cage neon pink drenched oddity. Based on a HP Lovecraft story, a meteorite lands in the garden of a family and shit starts to go off the rails. Very odd film that feels like something from the 80's, which is what they were going for I suppose. Meanders a bit but enjoyable enough and weird Nicolas Cage is always fun to watch.
Underwater
A mining platform on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean starts to come apart and survivors try to escape. Pretty naff but the effects are good. It has people in (very cool looking) diving suits running across the ocean floor whilst under 7 miles of crushing water pressure. It plays fairly fast and loose with deep sea physics, sometimes pressure is a problem sometimes it can be ignored. It should be super cold down there but people stroll around in their underwear. Decompression isn't really an issue, shit like that. This is a film that should have been made 20 odd years ago. It's also a Disney film and only it's 2nd attempt at horror apparently, it has sea monsters...

Uncut Gems (Netflix)
Not sure what the whole bruha was about this film. It is well acted and directed but none of the characters are likable, empathetic or require redeeming. Everyone comes across as spoiled brats. Everyone shouts and is incredibly rude. I have been to NY over 15 times and I do see some element of NY in the film but I not know of any New Yorker who has a hectic, hedonistic, obnoxious lifestyle as the main character, Ratner.
The last 30 minutes is excellent and the story is compelling. Not sure what to make of it really except everyone in it is ugly (character not face)

Horse Girl
Really liked this! It’s bonkers and Alison Brie is really great. I don’t really know how to describe it at all but I’d say it’s worth watching for her alone.

The Inglorious Bastards
Not the Tarantino film but the 1978 one. First off it's a spaghetti war film with half the cast being dubbed and everyone has 70's haircuts. Most looked like they'd just left some sleezy porn production. There are some obvious cardboard cutouts used for tanks in one scene and a flight of bombers are just drawn on a sheet of paper and passed in front of the camera. Battle scenes involve extras running into hails of gunfire and jumping into the air from explosions. Utter trash but strangely fun to watch
Contains spoilers obviously..

Life After Flash (Amazon Prime)
A documentary about making of Flash Gordan and the actor Sam Jones. The parts about Flash Gordon excellent, the parts about Sam Jones, meh

Into the Wild
On the one hand, it’s a tough, honest look at a young man who chose an extreme lifestyle to explore his humanity and his relationship with nature. On the other hand, what a daft, arrogant, pretentious, selfish bellend! There were numerous moments which I assume were intended to be profound where instead I found myself thinking like Mark from Peep Show:
The film itself is well made and interesting, but Chris McCandless seems like he was the sort of person that warning labels are invented for.
7/10

Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?
I really enjoyed that! Its funny, most of the jokes still land and Mansfield is great! Its rare she was on screen and we weren't laughing.
Exit Plan
This is a very strange movie about Jaime Lannister with terminal cancer deciding to take his own life. Its not as depressing as that sounds because its definitely weird! Beautifully shot, lovely landscapes and some really well done scenes. Yeah. Its weird.

Re: I Just Watched (Films)
This film pissed me off an inordinate amount. I became aware of it when as a book it became the subject of an insane bidding war for the rights. I picked it up and thoroughly enjoyed it, particularly the first key which was from the infamously hard Tomb of Horrors AD&D module that I owned as a kid and GM'd my little D&D group through. The film stripped out nearly all the cool references (I knew that they weren't allowed to use the Star Wars or Megaman references but they gutted the book content) and played fast and loose with the story to create nothing more than a dull uninspired action flick.Sly Boots wrote: ↑Sun May 17, 2020 10:15 amReady Player One
Saw this was available on Prime so thought I'd give it a go despite not really knowing anything about it.
It was... ok, I guess? I mean, it was fine, but honestly by the end I'd started to find the constant 70s and 80s references exhausting they were coming so thick and fast. Also, I dunno, I guess I was expecting something slightly more cerebral, with commentary on how we're increasingly leading virtual lives and where that might lead, but really it was just a heavily CGI dumb action flick, which was a bit disappointing.

Edge of Tomorrow
Not watched this in a couple of years but it still holds up and is a cracking action/sci fi film. Imagine D Day with aliens via Groundhog Day. How I missed this in the cinema is a mystery to me, was it not promoted or what?
I think a sequel was due to go into production this year but that's highly unlikely to ever happen now. Shame.

Train to Busan
Really good Korean zombie film set on a high speed train. It's great when you see a worn out genre like zombies put in a new setting and made fun again. You also get hyper aggressive, fast moving with zero self preservation zombies which make for some shockingly hilarious scenes

It's a really enjoyable film. There's also an animated prequel, Seoul Station, which is well worth a watch as well.Animalmother wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 10:51 amTrain to Busan
