I Just Watched (Films)
Re: I Just Watched (Films)
Fury Road is one of the best action films ever made. It's up there with Die Hard and The Raid.
Re: I Just Watched (Films)
I had the misfortune of watching it for the first time with someone who had seen it several times before and kept telling me what was going to happen in the next scene and how much they loved the next scene because of trivia points A, B, and C.
I hated every moment of that film and there is no chance I will ever watch it again and I hate that person now too.

On the plus side, you realised you had a toxic friend and immediately cut them out of your life forever, right?

Re: I Just Watched (Films)
It left me pretty cold. The plot, what there was, was paper thin it was more just 2 hours of shit blowing up, the film equivalent of a Just Cause game. I mean, very stylish, but I got to the end and thought "Really? That was the best you could come up with?". I do struggle generally with films that are style over substance though.

Same. Thought it was an impressive looking bad movie. But hayho, glad some folk get more out of it. I’m100% sure some of my favorite films would be considered bad by some of you horses for courses!

Tasteless swines
They've announced a new film, a prequel about Furiosa. Completely different cast though.

The World's End
Easily the weakest of the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, this is still a fairly fun romp. It just doesn't have the same level of humour of Shaun or Fuzz, the setup isn't as good and the payoff had no hope of beating its predecessor. It has heart, but I just find myself agreeing with the supporting leads - I guess I just don't have the nostalgia that the film seems to rely on.

Been on a bit of a spree with the boy. watched:
Pulp Fiction: My top favourite film ever.
Robocop: Still looks pretty good today
Starship Troopers: Since we were on a Paul Verhoeven run
When I next have him I reckon we'll be onto Trading Places (mainly for Jamie Lee Curtis) and then The Thing (The 80's version natch)

Would it be worth showing him the 1950's The Thing then blowing his mind with the 80's one?Rusty wrote: ↑Sat Oct 17, 2020 9:20 pmBeen on a bit of a spree with the boy. watched:

Fatal Deviation (1998)
As someone who enjoys bad films - not the likes of Sharknado which set out to be bad, but films which try their damnedest and completely miss the mark - I was completely unprepared for this goldmine which was introduced to me by a friend who stumbled across it. Written by, directed by and starring martial artist James Bennett, Fatal Deviation is the age-old tale of County Meath martial artist Jimmy Bennett trying to discover who he is and what happened to his father.
After this setup (which is narrated in the first 30 seconds), all sense (and hope) is swiftly high-kicked out of the nearest window.
To adequately frame how bad this is, James Bennett set about making this film with no budget in place (he eventually secured £8,900 for it), and so he simply asked his mates to act and film it with him, none of whom had any acting or filming experience. The result is substanially worse than you might expect. Despite this, they somehow managed to get Boyzone singer Mikey Graham in a supporting role, which the film proudly touts in the opening credits as "Starring Mikey Graham from the rock group Boy Zone".
Anyway... events make little progress, inclduing some scrapes with Jimmy and the local gang in the local Londis shop. Then, with no warning or explanation, Poundshop Obi Wan turns up:
He sets about training Jimmy in the ways of martial arts, which Jimmy already seems pretty comfortable with given that he's dropkicked most of the town by this point. Nevertheless, the training takes place, and it mostly consists of Obi Wan hitting Jimmy with sticks. At one point the sticks are on fire. We're also treated to a scene at a funfair with some dodgems, where none of the principal cast appear and nothing happens. This goes on for a good three or four minutes and is never referenced again.
Trying to explain the plot from this point would be impossible, as there isn't one. There's a UFC-style fighting competition in a barn that goes on forever, and Jimmy fights the gang boss's henchman, The Seagull, ostensibly an homage to Steven Seagal. There is a dirt bike chase in the woods where Jimmy stands on the back of a moving bike and guns people down for no clear reason. There's even a dramatic car crash at one point which apparently was an unplanned, genuine crash which they decided to keep in the film anyway.
In conclusion, the experience of Fatal Deviation is largely what I expect it's like to have Alzheimer's: things happen, nothing much makes sense, but it's all wistfully entertaining for the wrong reasons.
Here's the trailer:
And if you've 76 minutes which you're prepared to never get back, here's the full thing:

5/10 on IMDB!
Edit: Although, having read some of the reviews, I suspect they're taking the piss.
This is one of the 10/10 reviews:

To call this just a film would be tantamount to calling Da Vinci just a mere artist or Scorcese an amateur.
I believe this film has the ability to change lives and should be introduced into School Ciriculums to combat drug-abuse, underage smoking and drinking and would also eradicate underage pregnancies.
The lessons learned in this has already made me stop smoking 100 Mayfair before breakfast, and I've even stopped drinking 3 bottles of Frosty Jack a day, which is around 20% of my daily requirement of Frosty Jack.
The lessons learned in this masterpiece, if viewed by our representatives in Parliament definitely has the power to stop wars and allow some form of united world socialism.
Bless you Shay Casserly, and Jimmy Bennet for introducing me to what can be accomplished with shared vision and a beautiful philosophy that underlies this masterclass of film-making.

To be fair, several litres of Frosty Jack would make the film more coherent, if anything.

Saint Maud
I was surprised at how good this was. I felt it owes a whole lot to The Witch without being derivative. It’s about a nurse who can (believes?) she feels the power of God in her, guiding her to do his work on earth. She becomes a carer for a terminal cancer patient and begins helping her clean her soul.
Enola Homes
Sherlock’s younger sister (Millie Bobby Brown) has to track down their mother when she disappears. At is hearty it’sa girls can do anything a boy can movie and I rather enjoyed it. Is maybe a touch twee at times and I could have done without the boy doing the “aren’t I dreamy” expressions and I think it would have been better with a girl in that role but it is what it is. Yeah, pretty good, quite funny too.
