Outlaw King

A nice surprise, this one. I hadn't paid it any attention despite it being plastered all over Netflix for the last week, but then I saw someone praising the level of historical accuracy in it and the dedication to detail (with the minor exception of some events which have been condensed for dramatic purposes). It's hands down the best film I can think of in those terms. It is in some ways the historically impressive sequel to the historically hilarious Braveheart.

It also turns out Chris Pine can act, and the rest of the cast are also excellent. The drama is engaging for the most part and the fight scenes are exceptional. Highly recommended.

Yeah, it was a great film, and far more historically grounded than the ultra-Nationalist fantasy that was Braveheart. I also like the fact that the epilogue emphasised that it was a King of Scotland (James VI) who inherited the English throne, not the other way around, in the formation of the United Kingdom.

BUT, it's still got its problems.

For example, although it was cool featuring the Battle of Loudoun Hill (which my cousins live right next door to), Edward I died months after that battle, not before, and Edward II was not present there. Also, Edward I was not buried by the side of the road on the way to Scotland, as was suggested in the film, but in Westminster Abbey.

The Kid Who Would Be King
Its fun but its very televisual. It also felt way longer than its run time. I'd probably have loved it when I was 12 but my jaded old man mind got too caught up on the silly things, daft choices, real poor character swings and fairly naff acting. Its an inventive and sweet pile of rubbish.

Happy Death Day 2U
They should have left it with the first. The last 10mins of the first movie is about on par with this one. It makes less sense and ends up feeling more like Dr Who than a horror com.

The Machine

This is a low budgeted UK sci film from 2013. It has a lot going for it as it covers the same ground as Chappie but imo it covers the topic with far more maturity. Some people have credited it to be a forerunner to Blade Runner and I can see why. The only drawback is it limited budget. With more money and better sets, a tighter script and some more special effects it will be a pretty amazing film

Fighting With My Family
I didnt want to see this, it looked pretty rubbish but it was all that was on. It starts bad with some real awful child actors but from the point it flashes forward a few years I really enjoyed it! Sure it paints the WWE as a tough but fair, kind and supportive organisation which may stretch the facts a little but as a rags to riches story its really quite good. I do find it weird when they fictionalise set in stone facts ie; I youtubed the real match and her mic work is completely different but acht, whatever! It seems closer to the facts than Bohemian Rhapsody. Also the Rock is adorable as always.

I never thought I'd say this but Lena Headey and Nick Frost make a believable couple.....

Children of Men

I decided to go back to this one after reading the book that it is (very, very loosely) based upon. I still feel the same way about it as I did back when I watched it as a teenager: a resounding 'meh'. I don't get why so many people on the internet wank over this film so much. Yes, some of the cinematography is excellent, the long shots are cool, the world building is nice. But the acting/script, with the exception of maybe Michael Caine's part, is rubbish. Every line is delivered in a strange or corny way. The plot of going to a refugee camp to get a boat is pretty stupid too, and the ending is a bit predictable as well. I wish it was as good as so many people say it is.

I feel exactly the same. I did love some of the cinematography and the conceit is pretty interesting but the film overall didn't grab me.

A Star Is Born

At best it is a good movie, but I fail to appreciate the hype. The music is good. This was another masterclass in mumble acting that sells itself as "deep". At times I was on the verge of putting the subtitles on because he said what, what did they say, come again, what ? Anyway it did not get in the way of the story (if you can call it that). If anything the only thing that I really learnt is that the X factor is something and its not all about looks (but lets be honest 9 times out of 10 it is).

The film kind of went nowhere for about 1 hour 45 minutes (which if you think about it is a major accomplishment) and it redeemed itself in the last 45 minutes. It is not a film I could revisit, even if it was on the TV.

personally I think I prefer Lady Gaga without all that makeup shit on her face and hair. You know - normal.

Captain Marvel

Let’s skip to the obvious: Yes, I really liked it. There’s been so much negativity flying around about it in the last week that you could be forgiven for thinking it’s a disaster, but most of the criticisms I’ve seen - Brie Larson is wooden, she’s overpowered, it’s really dull - are hot bullshit. The first twenty minutes are hard to follow but that’s intentional and ultimately effective, because in between the buddy cop antics and the alien punching there’s a strong identity story at the core. As for it being dull, it’s visually muted for a large part but otherwise it’s almost as fun throughout as Thor Ragnarok.

And as for her being overpowered... it’s Carol Danvers, for fuck’s sake! The film restrains her for the most part. Besides, when was the last time someone did a Superman story and you were glad to see they brought kryptonite in as a plot device?

A great addition to the MCU that stands on its own feet while meaningfully expanding the wider story.

I thought it was fun but nowhere near Thor or GotG in the fun stakes. It was enjoyable and I was kind of surprised so see the negative reaction to it. The jokes mostly all landed well and Tallos was great. Young Sam looked surprisingly good, glowing mohawk on the other hand looked pretty awful - is that something from the comics or is that a bold design choice the film makers made?

Yeah, I’m not sure about the Mohawk but it is from the comics.

Finally getting my kids into Star Wars. We watched A New Hope two weekends ago, The Empire Strikes Back last weekend and this coming weekend we'll do Return of the Jedi. After that we'll move onto The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. I have to say, I've always loved Star Wars, but I'm having an absolute blast sharing it with my children -- I feel like I'm reliving 1997 when I went to see the Special Editions in the cinema.

I love my girls, but there are occasions I have a twinge of regret at not having a son to share stuff like this with. I've tried Star Wars a few times on my eldest (who's 8), but despite her going into it with some interest as kids at school talk about it, when it came to sitting down and watching the film with me she'd grown bored and wandered off long before Luke even left Tattooine.

My 5-year-old said: "I'm ONLY interested in Luke Skywalker. Nobody else."

He's gonna love Episodes 7 and 8... ¬_¬
