The Umbrella Academy S2

I wasn't overly sold on season one but the new series is so much better in many ways. Better setting, story and the use of music is excellent. Very much enjoyed it.

The Deuce 1-3

So finally saw all 3 seasons. Overall that was some good TV with amazing sets and characters. It is definitely one to re-watch sometime in the future. Its all about the characters and some were really fleshed out and believable.
Spoiler
The ending was really touching as its all about re-visiting memories full of ghosts of characters that died along the way.
It is great to see a series with a beginning, middle and end and 3 seasons was perfect.

Agree, it was so much more than just tits 'n' bits. Entertaining watch, and the final episode was great.

HH I have a question for you regards The Deuce
Spoiler
Why do you think Eileen left Hank when he offered her so much and an escape from doing porn. Of all the characters I did not understand her motivation in the last season. My best friend is a New Yorker and I see a similar drive for independence in her as I do in Eileen character, but it is as if she could not accept something that good for her. What is your take ? Her decision to leave her rich boyfriend to do a porn scene which she felt was beneath her jarred with me.

The Jinx (Sky)

In a similar light to the Staircase it is a case of "did he do it". This time it is pretty obvious Robert Dursk did kill 3 times (this is a guy who could have run a multi-billion dollar cooperation) but it is how he got away with it. He is a cold character with dead eyes. The documentary is fascinating as the makers interview Dursk numerous times and we get his side of the story against the facts and reconstructions of why its obvious he is guilty. The ending is chilling. The fact that the Dursk trial has still yet to be resolved is remarkable given the mountain of evidence against him. The documentary did leave out some important facts which you can find out on Wikipedia which make it less valuable. As a piece of TV docu-drama real life murder mystery it works very well.

Better Call is always on the right side of outlandish but believable.

That is until this happened.....

We've only watched the first couple of episodes, but have to say I'm quite taken by 3%.

It's set in a dystopian near-future Brazil, and is in Portuguese (apparently the dubbed version isn't great, so watch it subtitled). Basically the majority of people live in vast, impoverished slums, but at age 20 they're given the opportunity to earn a spot in the Offshore - a wealthy and privileged community of the elite 3% of the population. They do so by undergoing a series of tests called The Process. If they're eliminated, that's it, they're doomed to live out the rest of their lives in the slums with no hope of escape, and so the tests are often cut-throat and those who get eliminated can take it... badly.

There are four seasons on Netflix and I've no idea if it will go off the rails at some point, but so far I'm enjoying it a lot.

L'Immortal

The Gomorrah film. This is OK. I did like the flashbacks as to why Ciro got the nickname The Immortal. I did like the plot about the Russians in Latvia. I did like the ending. This film also has serious major problems
Spoiler
It is pretty obvious here the producers of Gomorrah had a Dallas situation on their hands when they killed Bobby and ratings fell. People love Ciro (even though he coldly kills tens of people) so they had to bring him back. Now we saw him slowly drop to the bottom of the sea...only to be "picked" up bby a rival family (who are not named) and have nothing to do with Blue Blood's gang. How on earth did they pick up Ciro's body without being seen ??

Personally as much as I like Ciro and I like the actor I would have preferred if his character remained dead
In terms of continuity I think you HAVE to see this film before embarking on season 5

Just started Season 2 of The Boys - looking promising, buckets of gore, Karl Urban swearing for England and some really funny visuals in the first episode (Translucent's funeral being hysterical).

I quite like the idea that they've gone old school and only releasing episodes on Fridays.
Time to chat and guess what's going to happen more.

Law and Order (1978)

So I read this was landmark TV when it aired back in the day. I tracked down the DVD on CinemaParadiso. Yep it is absolutely superb. Not only is it a powerful drama, episodes 1 and 2 is a blueprint of The Wire and other contemporary dramas that get so much acclaim. Those 2 episodes is just brilliant. Told from 2 perspectives. One from the police, the other from the villians. Like a jigsaw piece you mentally build the bigger picture as the story is than told in flashback and fast-forward. These 2 episodes were totally before its time in story telling, akin to Quentin Taratino.

Episodes 3 and 4 take on a more contemporary track with a straight forward telling of the court case and than prison. The last episode is beyond heart wrenching. I found it more gritty than Scum. This drama is so powerful it got banned until 2006. Puts the whole police corruption in perspective given the mistrust of police today. It was recently aired on BBC4. Catch it if it repeats.

Had a look and some of the episodes are on YouTube. I pity any American that tries to watch it, it seems to be 90% cockney slang

"Just hadda chin wag with one of my snouts, there's a blagger dow'n in Old Kentish Town do'n a bit of mischief. Get the Guv on the blower an we'll hav a butchers..."

Thanks for the heads up, it looks good.
