I may have an 80s action fest this bank holiday weekend. I really want to re-watch No Dead Heroes, a little known gem of utter woe that ticks every 80s action box imaginable. The issue is there are no rips available and it was never released on DVD, so I'll have to see if I've still got a VHS player hidden away somewhere. It'd be totally worth it, though. This sums it up far better than I ever could:

My favourite bit:
After Vietnam vet Richard Sanders says to the head of the CIA, “Fuck you, Baylor, I’m not one of your pawns anymore,” he actually picks up a pawn from a nearby chess board and throws it at the director’s chest.

We should have movie nights where we synch up pressing play. Almost like having real friends ¬_¬

Was just talking to Mantis last night about how fun the Robocop film night we had on the old place a few years back was. Consensus is it would probably be a challenge to get everyone's schedule to synch up in the same way, but it could be that we try starting a film club along the same lines as the book club Doug is setting up.

I'd be up for a synced viewing of something, time permitting.

Robocop.

Some of the most marvellous quotage from Clarence Boddicker and Dick Jones, plus lashings of gore. Genius.

I listened to an interview with that actor. That scene ended up taking 2 months to shot due to fuck upsvand reshots etc. Added bonus, one of the squibs went off on his testicle by mistake :/

That reminds me of this hilarious re-edit video somebody made, using outtake footage:

"Kinney survives ED-209"

Re-watched Commando last night, but the Directors Cut. Nice to see the extra dialogue together with all the gore (especially the shed scene) and man that's a film that even though it has aged terribly just never gets old.

Watched Robocop 2 last night on a wim. Not as bad as I remember it being, not a patch on the original but not bad. It's very gory in places with some downright unpleasant shit going on. Kane as a villain is a bit weak where as the kid is a sinister little fucker. The stop motion bits are great, I can only imagine how long that last fight took to make.

So a bit shit, but no where near as bad as the shit that is 3.

Going to put this here as opposed to the 'films I just watched' thread as it probably fits better.

But last night once again rewatched Aliens, and it's still a great film. Are there any other franchises where the first two installments are objectively as good films, but have a radically different feel to one another? I stand to be corrected, but it feels practically unique in that respect.

But what mainly struck me on last night's viewing - and I'm certain I won't have been the only person to make this observation - was how long it takes before you see a xenomorph. It's over an hour into the film - until then you have Ripley's dream sequence with a chest burster but in terms of action and horror that's largely it. And I think it works really well to build atmosphere and suspense, obviously because having seen the first one we know what's out there.

I'm not convinced a big-budget film in this genre would be brave enough to do something like that these days, everything seems keen to throw everything it has at you from almost the first moments, as if there's a fear that if audiences aren't constantly bombarded with spectacle then they'll get bored and leave.
