Star Trek: Picard

Yes, that is apparently what they're calling it. The first teaser for this has been released. Don't get too excited, or do depending on what you thought of Discovery; explosions are refreshingly absent.

I expect this to be just as pungent a turd as Discovery. I'll watch the pilot and second episode when they land, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Yeah, Discovery has knocked my confidence in CBS' intentions for the brand. If this turns out to be another CGI-heavy, thoughtless explodeathon, I think I'll have to call time on what was a formative franchise for me.

I didn't mind S1 Discovery, the second half being a vast improvement on the first, but everything I've read about S2 has been negative so I didn't bother even trying it.

I'm a convert to The Orville. It's everything new Trek should be.

Yep, I liked Discovery season 1 for what it was, but season 2 was a train wreck and only served to show a focus on everything about season 1 that I didn't like.

I'd hope that the reverence for the Picard character is what's driving this new series, rather than him just being a bankable name. Much as I admire Patrick Stewart, I believe he was very much in favour of the stupid dune buggy sequence in Nemesis, so I don't think he's the calm hand on the rudder that a lot of fans are expecting.

Two returns I did not see coming.

Well I'm sufficiently grabbed by that.

Here's another upload:

Everything I read about Picard suggests it's going to be a complete clusterfuck... but still I live in hope.

The full trailer debuted at Comicon yesterday.

There's rather too much of Discovery in the visual design for my liking, I just hope that doesn't extend to the story writing too. I'm still in two minds as to whether this series is a good idea in the first place; it's increasingly feeling like they're using the character's history merely for credibility rather than as the basis for a continuation of that character.

Having now finally watched Discovery s2, yeah it was uneven but actually that was a lot of fun.

Anson Mount plays a brilliant Pike.

I didn't realize this is out on friday! Anyone else hyped?

No.

I should be, I really should, but I just don't think what I've seen of the show so far is worthy of much hope. TNG was a formative programme for me, but what was so good about it seems to have been lost on the people in charge of the franchise, who think it needs to be Star Wars.

I will be ever so happy to eat my hat, but I refuse to get my hopes up. I will sit down with a bottle of Chateau Picard (or whatever M&S have in) and watch it on Friday, I just expect to be disappointed.

we'll see what happens.
Like you TNG played a massive part of my early working career (I was working door to door and mainly worked at night, leaving me free all day to watch my friend's borrowed VHS box sets) but it hasn't aged particularly well, and didn't enjoy the new reboot star trek thingy.
But Picard is a great character...

I loved TNG back in the day but you are right, it hasn't aged all that well. DS9 was occasionally decent, but too invested in mumbo jumbo for me to really enjoy. I dipped a toe in subsequent ST waters but they always left me cold.

Don't expect much of this - Picard was an aspect of TNG and without the rest of the show around the character...
