Is it really Blade Runner month, as in that's actually a thing? I've been meaning to rewatch it for months now before watching the new(ish!) one, which I still haven't got round to seeing. Seems like a good time!

A new life awaits you in the Off-World colonies. The chance to begin again in a golden land of opportunity and adventure!
Between tedium and fright
Such is the song of the nether world
The hissing of rats
And the jarring chants of angels

The local cinema group near us aired the directors cut of the original as part of their film month earlier in the year. First time I've ever seen it on the big screen and it was excellent.

Two absolute masterpiece movies when paired with 2049.

Is the new one worth seeing then? I've hovered over it on Netflix a few times without quite feeling inspired to start it.

I think the new one is better. It's one of my favourite films.

Seeing it at the cinema really was quite an experience. Long moments of almost total silence punctuated with huge walls of synth. It was amazing.

Oh ok, that's pretty high praise right there, I'll stick it on my list.

I too think 2049 is the better film, but then I was never actually a massive fan of the original. It's a masterpiece of design, but the film just never quite clicked with me.

I favour the original by far, but not because I think 2049 lacks quality. The original just speaks to me and takes me on a special journey, every time I watch it.

In comparison, I've only watched 2049 a couple of times and I never built up much of a connection to the world they created. Technically, it's superb. Just lacks a special ingredient for me.

me too

I liked 2049 but I only saw it the once. The original on the other hand is just masterly in world building and you can feel the grime and overcrowding. 2049, to me, came across as sterile and cold. I do think they missed a bit in not employing Vangelis to write a new score.

Hollywood just cannot do continuity. This whole call to directors "its your project, do with it as you like" to sequels is not working. The reason why a sequel got a green light is because the original worked. That must mean something.

I thought the score was fantastic too. Zimmer did a very credible job of creating something new but still heavily inspired by the original. The Vangelis style jazz style prevalent in so much of the original movie wouldn't have worked with 2049 at all.

I think the world being cold and sterile was kind of the point. It had moved on from the sci fi dystopian noir setting to what was essentially post apocalyptic almost.
