I was talking with a guy about the new Poppy track (which mostly kind of fits that formula). He said it was "metalcore as fuck". I said "what even is metalcore?". He proceeded to play a bunch of tracks that were all near identical in structure. I think most of the bands had stupid modern band names like... Smelling Emotional Snow or whatever. I know I shouldn't but I tend to skip past bands where it would be a toss up if it were a band name or a Dillinger Escape Plan track. The tracks he played were fine, the heavy bits were decent the melodic bits a bit weak, all very hyper produced. Is metalcore used these days as like a trendy metal moniker like nu metal was? I barely heard the term much at all till recentish times where its all metalcore this and metalcore that.

Dude had a tattoo of one of the bands so you'd think I'd at least remember that one

(Edit: listened to it, I get the comparison. It's not a very good song to my ear though. Production seems lacking, too.)

I think you're just showing your age, either in actual years or detachment from this area of music.

I tend to think of Killswitch Engage as the go-to example of Metalcore, but to try not to lean only on my preferences I asked Wikipedia…

This led to bands such as Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, Trivium, As I Lay Dying, Bullet for My Valentine, and Parkway Drive finding mainstream popularity.

Yeah, that seems fair enough.

You know it might be detachment. Ive never liked BfmV and Killswitch while being wholly inoffensive and alright live I'd never choose to put them on. Maybe I have selective amnesia. :p. I was heavy into math for a hot minute which is apparently a subgenre of metalcore.... who knew?

Math...core? Don't recognise any of the names in that wiki article except Dillinger Escape Plan, who I saw live once which instantly made me avoid them from then on.
I don't even remember who they were supporting!

My point previously was that your potted description of Metalcore didn't match any BfmV or KsE vibes I could think of, but seeing as we're coming from opposite sides we'll probably never agree on a description anyway.

Never listened to them, think their singer showed up at a Spiritbox show recently? (I really like Spiritbox, seeing them next year.) "JINJER is a Ukrainian 4-piece progressive metal band with strong hardcore and groove metal origins."
Getting the prog vibes from a few songs, sure. Listening to Rogue now, I don't think it's my jam. Not sure why.

I have long since given up on the endless genre pigeonholes that music (particularly metal it seems) invents.

Although having written that sentence I realise that I do use these, but as signposts steering me away from things I won't have any time for.

- Melodeath, death metal, black metal, thrash metal, prog metal, folk metal, blackgaze, viking metal - why come and play your goodness to me, see if I enjoy your offerings.

- Mathcore, drone metal, noise metal, goregrind, (almost all) slam, power metal, christian metal - there's the door, kindly avail yourselves of it.

In other news I am absolutely loving the latest from Blood Incantation. Genres? Why certainly, I would say it is sci-fi prog death metal

It certainly is nuts though, it whips from blast beats and some absolutely epic guitar work into chilled synth passages that wouldn't be out of place in a Pink Floyd record and back again. Nice growled and clean vocals too.
