\m/ Metal \m/

Post by Snowy » Fri Aug 17, 2018 4:50 pm

What the title says.

Post all your metal listenings, giggings, and anything else related to the dark and heavy side of life.

As a starter for 10, new Bloodbath album announced, once again with Nick Holmes from Paradise Lost on growls:

As well as a suitably Bloodbath album title, quite a cool cover. No songs teased just yet but I do like me a bit of BB silliness.

As it wouldn't be a thread without something for your delectation though, recently I have been enjoying the new one Coffin Birth from Extremity. Another little gem extracted from the pages of AMG, which led me to also find their debut EP. Linky link:

I'm a bit out of touch with what's going on in the metal scene at the minute. The last amazing album I heard outside of more proggy stuff was the tech-death Sikth EP.

I've come to the conclusion that any band that has a logo that looks like a bundle of sticks is too heavy for me.
How far are we allowed to stray from hardcore death/black/whatever-the-fuck-it-is metal?

That said, I'd like to share Veil of Maya:

You can share whatever you like, as long as it is metal :) I do tend to dwell in the murky subterranean depths where downtuning, blast beats and trem-picking are the norm, but I do venture up occasionally :)

I draw the line at Nickelback or Fish Finger Death Lunch though

I hope that’s another one of your recipes you’ll be treating us to seeing in the food thread.

Haha no, Five Finger Death Punch that one.

I do BBQ fish occasionally though, lets see what I can come up with...

I'm a pretty big fan of YOB as I simply love their brand of weird doom:

I also really enjoy the madness of these guys:

I recently discovered this guy and was completely blown away. He's a one man band who designs most of the instruments that he uses, you should check out the short Vice documentary on him. Anyway, this:

I'm drifting slowly away from metal of any sort, finding it generally tiresome, repetitive and intolerable to my ears.

However, I'm finding a niche interest in dungeon synth, which is described in its Wikipedia article thus:
The genre takes inspiration from dark atmospheres found in black metal and applies it to dreamier ambient songs.
A classic case in point is Inheritor of the Forest Throne by Murgrind:

Between tedium and fright
Such is the song of the nether world
The hissing of rats
And the jarring chants of angels

I'm a Sabaton guy, perhaps rather predictably.

Ah, not listened to any Sabaton for a while! Only they could write songs with such bombastic lyrics and marry it so well to energetic music.

Sabaton were my introduction to power metal back when I was about 15. They're great! Even better live.

I'm not really sure if this counts as "metal" but it's hard to classify.

I'm going to call it "Wardruna-like" music for want of an official term. Basically, Viking-themed, spiritual-ambient-folk, usually a side-project of actual metal bands.

Listening to this helps me get through my work:

Between tedium and fright
Such is the song of the nether world
The hissing of rats
And the jarring chants of angels

I listen to a lot of similar sounding stuff when I'm at work usually, that or some other ambient, drone tunes or a mellow game soundtrack.

I've been stuck in the office doing horrifically dull stuff for the last couple of weeks though and have been tiding myself over with something slightly more relentless.

I'm really into my syncopated beats and polymeters, and I don't think even Meshuggah have managed to top this album; though Cloudkicker consistently nails the style too.
