I hadn't heard of this either, or at least not until the stories about it being bad started appearing. Was this meant to be a big release?
Honestly I'm not sure why people try to take on Rockstar at the genre that they basically created. I doubt any other developer on Earth can match their budget unless either Microsoft or Sony throw all of their money behind it. I don't think I've ever played a contemporary urban open-world that really challenged Rockstar's efforts, though I can't pretend I go looking for them given my usual lack of interest in open-world games.

Supposedly GTA 6 cost $2 billion and I assume the past 7 years to make. Very hard to compete with that.

Re: General Gaming News
Mindseye the game was meant as nothing more than a taster so it was never surprising as to how it turned out.
Only down to the direct GTA comparisons with which as more previews came out they ended up having to reel it in as not actually comparable. The entire thing was actually intended overall to very much be a community based channelling of future content to be added by the games included Everywhere system which is what it originally stems from, so basically an incomplete "open world" playable release + tools to add new community content for £54.99 and one they obviously took on far much more than they could handle especially as a brand-new studio. It's become far too easy now for developers to offer up such tools with endless promises of something to come and channels such as the one below all add to that narrative based on limited knowledge of what is actually achievable.
Building the future, and keeping the past alive - are one and the same thing.

Re: General Gaming News
The remaster of System Shock 2 is out today:
It's one of my favourite games of all time, and Nightdive did an excellent job with the remaster of the first game, so I'm very much looking forward to a long-awaited replay.
I'll be interested to see if they've retained the unique, floaty movement from the Dark engine (of Thief and Thief 2 fame), because while it could be a pain at times, it's so embedded in my memory of those games that it'd be jarring to lose it. Also, does this open the door to a Thief remaster...?

Re: General Gaming News
If this had the same level of attention given to the environments as it had the character models, I'd have been interested. It feels like there's a new version of System Shock 2 released every 5 years or so, but they only ever update the enemies and weapons, the level geometry looks identical to the original release. Nightdive managed to faithfully update the original's levels so that they looked as modern as the rest of the game but without the constraints of 1994's hardware, and while that game obviously needed more work done to it, it's a shame they haven't lavished the (much better) sequel with the same level of enthusiasm.
It feels like a missed opportunity to attract a new audience to one of PC gaming's best, rather than just slightly modernising it for the people who already know it.

Re: General Gaming News
I watched a review and it said the game now looks like what people probably remember it looking like back in the day. There's very little new that a mod hadn't already improved years ago. I've played the game several times but always gave up on the terrible last level, that apparently hasn't been much improved so can't see myself getting it.Raid wrote: ↑Thu Jun 26, 2025 11:22 amIf this had the same level of attention given to the environments as it had the character models, I'd have been interested. I wonder if the Thief games will be getting a remaster.
Re: General Gaming News
It’s as good as it ever was, but honestly the upgrades over the existing version on GOG are minimal at best and don’t really justify £20.
Re: General Gaming News
ve tried to play SS2 with graphics upgrades a number of times and I think it looks like shit and here it looks like shit still. They make the enemies into cartoons where the original might be super low poly but they look creepy. The old midwife model is still scary!

Re: General Gaming News
I've seen the updated model and I think the new one looks better. I find Nightdive are excellent at updating things to have the same feel as the original. Besides, the Cyborg Midwife was always scary because of her soothing, but electronic voice saying "I'll tear out your spine." That was always the thing with SS2; the visuals were pretty dated looking even at the time, but the sound design was exceptionally creepy and atmospheric.

Re: General Gaming News
Exact same as Thief, dated as balls graphics but fantastic sound and atmosphere.
The Haunted Cathedral level was arsehole puckering.

Yeah I really wasn't prepared for that - I am someone who avoids scary games like the plague but I was so invested by that point I had to get through it.
