Lucasfilm Games reborn

Post by DjchunKfunK » Wed Jan 13, 2021 2:52 pm

Lucasfilm has restarted Lucasfilm Games with the idea that going forward all video games will come under this umbrella. As part of this new phase they have announced a partnership with Bethesda and Wolfenstein developer Machine Games to work on an Indiana Jones game and Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment on an open world Star Wars title.

Those are two pretty good partnerships and will hopefully result in some good games, unlike the deal with EA.

I wonder if there's a chance Level 1313 will get a revival, I think the game was pretty close to completion when the plug got pulled.

That's probably unlikely as this new Lucasfilm Games team is not looking to build a development studio.

So they're just a publisher?

Sort of, they are just organising all titles under this new umbrella so that could be directly partnering with a developer and publishing or just licensing the IP out to a publisher.

EA will be one of the companies making the games, I think their exclusivity on the licence expires next year. Ubisoft just announced they're making a Star Wars game too.

In fairness to EA, the actual games have been fairly decent, it's just the hideous interference from the people holding the purse strings that has been problematic. Battlefront wasn't a terrible game if you ignore the monetisation, I really liked Fallen Order, and Squadrons seemed to be fairly well received. It's just a shame that we had so few games during a period where the franchise has been quite heavily marketed.

In vaguely related news, Battlefront 2 is free on the Epic gamestore for the next week. Picked it up and will see what it is like sans lootboxes. Probably sans players too these days, we shall see.

It’sa very impressive auditory experience and I did enjoy the story way more than I thought I would but gameplay is just daft-battlefield. In a bad way.
